O’Neal out 8 weeks; Hickson, Varajeo, Powe time to step up big

Shaquille O'Neal (WFE)

Shaquille O’Neal had successful surgery on his finger Monday which is good news to Cavs fans. However, Dr. Thomas Graham and Cavs team physician Dr. Richard Parker both whom performed the procedure gave the ultimate bad news, out for the rest of the regular season.

The eight week time frame will keep Shaq out the remaining 21 games and the first round of the playoffs. The thought is he’ll be back in time for the a meeting deep in the playoffs with the Orlando Magic and Dwight Howard. The real reason he was brought to Cleveland in the first place.

The doctors say O’Neal had a third degree strain, which meant the ligament had to be completely torn. Shaq had a similar injury to the same thumb 15 years ago.

The Cavaliers will be shorthanded at center for the next three weeks until the expected return of the recently traded to Washington and then released Zydrunas Ilgauskas if he chooses to come back. In the meantime, the team will have to use three forwards at the center position, J.J. Hickson, Anderson Verajao and Leon Powe.  Hickson played center against the Knicks on Monday night and looked like he could handle the  job with no problem at all.
