2012 MLB Highlight: Adam Dunn became sixth player to hit 40 HR’s in both leagues

Chicago White Sox 1B/DH Adam Dunn’s 40-homer season during the 2012 season, allowed him to become just the sixth player in major league history to belt 40 or more homers in a season in the National League and the American League.

In the N.L., the 33-year-old hit 40-plus homers in a season four times for the Cincinnati Reds (2004-2007) and 40 homers playing for the Reds and Arizona in 2008.

The five players who accomplished the feat before Dunn includes: Darrell Evans with Atlanta and Detroit, Shawn Green with Toronto and the Los Angeles Dodgers, Ken Griffey, Jr. with Seattle and the Reds, Mark McGwire with Oakland and St. Louis and Jim Thome with Cleveland, Philadelphia and the Chicago White Sox.

Dunn is a 2-time All-Star, 2002 with the Reds and 2012 with the White Sox. He has 406 career homers and 1,018 RBI’s.

Dunn has also played for the Washington Nationals.

Bengals News: Playoff bound after 3-5 start

The Cincinnati Bengals did the unthinkable, going from a 3-5 start that included a 4-game losing streak to Cleveland, Miami, Pittsburgh and Denver to winning 6 of the next 7 to gain the playoffs with a 9-6 record.

The Bengals have one game left, at home next Sunday vs. Baltimore.

Sunday’s win at Heinz Field, which has not been kind to the Bengals over the years, was a welcome sight. The 13-10 victory ended the Bengals’ 10-game losing streak against Pittsburgh and Baltimore dating back to the 2009 season, when Cincinnati won dominated the AFC North Division with a 6-0 record.

NOTES:

***Bengals DT Geno Atkins earned 2.5 sacks on Sunday to increase his season total to 13.

***With four sacks against Ben Roethlisberger and Pittsburgh on Sunday, Cincinnati leads the NFL with 47.

***The Bengals tied a franchise record by winning six games on the road this season.

***There have been 121 NFL teams since 1990 to start a season in the first 8 games by going 3-5 and then make the playoffs; the Bengals are only the eighth team to do so.

***Cincinnati became the sixth NFL team since 2005 to make the postseason four times.

***The Bengals under Marvin Lewis have made progress, but are 0-3 in the playoffs.

Ohio Dominican earns 5th win; 45-7 over Notre Dame College

Ohio Dominican University head football coach Bill Conley has done a terrific job of turning around the program.

The Panthers notched their fifth win of 2012 making Notre Dame College a 45-7 victim on Saturday.

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in South Euclid, Ohio, a Cleveland suburb, was broken open in the third quarter by ODU scoring 31 points.

Leading the way for Ohio Dominican was QB Mark Miller who threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns and RB Brandon Schoen who scored twice while gaining 119 yards.

ODU is 5-3, 4-3 in the GLIAC and Notre Dame College drops to 1-7, 0-7.

COLUMBUS CITY LEAGUE FOOTBALL: Bulldogs seize control in 3rd quarter for win

The Columbus South Bulldogs turned an evenly-matched 6-6 game into a rout with a 30-point third quarter, rolling to a 30-14 win over visiting Warrensville Heights from the Cleveland area.

The Bulldogs were led by a trio of players: Deonte Lindsey, Shemar Marsh and Peso Walker.

Walker threw for two touchdowns; Marsh scored on a 53-yard TD jaunt and Lindsey started the scoring in the 3rd quarter with a 65-yard kickoff return.

Cardinals ink Westbrook for 2013

The St. Louis Cardinals have kept their current pitching rotation in tact for 2013, with a contract extension for veteran right-handed pitcher Jake Westbrook.

The two sides agreee to a $9.75 million, one-year contract.

The 34-year-old Athens, Georgia native, who has a 12-9 record with an ERA of 3.50.

Westbrook, who has also played for the Yankees and Cleveland, has a 97-93 record with an ERA of 4.26 with 910 strikeouts.

He was a 2004 All-Star and a 2011 World Series champion.
