HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Northland Vikings beats Beechcroft for share of City North championship, 12-7

The Northland Vikings football team has been tough all season to score and move the ball against.

In City League games alone, they allowed 6 points per game and 9.7 points overall.

The stingy defense has carried them during the 7 week City League schedule and it helped against their long-time City North Division nemesis, the Beechcroft Cougars.

Leading the effort in Friday’s 12-7 win over the Cougars were, Martrise Maddox and Divante Oliver. That win kept Northland’s playoff hopes alive.

Northland, who always has come in third in the City North behind Brookhaven and Beechcroft, were determined to change things this season. They hadn’t beaten Beechcroft since 2001. But in this game, they allowed the Cougars to score only on a kickoff return and then they themselves put together a clock-consuming drive in the fourth quarter to win the game.

The Vikings late in the third quarter went on that 15-play, 77-yard drive which ended early in the fourth quarter, with Tre’ Bias, the quarterback scoring on a sneak on fourth-and-1. Northland missed the two-point conversion. That drive ate up 6:56 of the game clock and allowed their defense to shut Beechcroft down the rest of the way.

The two schools tied for the North Division title. It’s Northland’s first championship since it tied Beechcroft and Brookhaven in 1996 under the old City League Red Division setup.

Northland is 8-2 overall, 6-1 in the City North.

By losing the game, Beechcroft will miss the playoffs for a second straight year. They end the season with solid records of 7-3 overall and 6-1 in the City North.
