Burke tossed scoring passes of to Cameron Graham and Josh Chichester.

Wright’s kickoff return made it 28-28 early in the fourth quarter, and Chris Philpott’s 36-yard field goal gave the Cardinals the lead with 6:30 remaining.

Louisville ups its record to 7-6 on the season.

Austin Davis threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns to become the career TD pass leader at Southern Mississippi with 53, moving ahead of Brett Favre and Lee Roberts.

The Eagles end the season at 8-5.

SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI GAME NOTES:

* This was the program’s ninth consecutive bowl appearance.

* Louisville is no stranger to Southern Miss. The two teams used to play every year when both were members of Conference USA. The teams kept playing even after the Cardinals left for the Big East in 2005. The Golden Eagles played at Louisville a year ago, losing in a thrilling contest, 25-23. The two teams will meet in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

* The Golden Eagles defensive front seven has been the team’s strength, they’re ranked 13th nationally against the run.

* Southern Miss’ run game with freshman Kendrick Hardy and an offensive unit that averages 203.4 rushing yards a game.

* The Golden Eagles lost three games in 2010 by a combined eight points.

* DE Cordarro Law is the defense’s top playmaker, leading the team in sacks with six and tackles for loss with 11 1/2. Law has four sacks in the last four games.

LOUISVILLE CARDINALS GAME NOTES:

* The Cardinals were happy to be in a bowl game. No one expected them to do anything under first year coach Charlie Strong, the former defensive coordinator at Florida. The team was picked to finish last in the Big East after being 4-8 in 2009 and three bowl-less seasons under Steve Kragthorpe.

* The Cardinals opened the season at 3-3, a bowl wasn’t even in the future. But despite a tough schedule in the Big East, they endured. The Cardinals knocked off eventual league champion Connecticut and won at improving Syracuse and scored a win against Rutgers to end at a bowl-eligible 6-6.

* Louisville runs the football most of the time with running back Bilal Powell who averages 120.9 yards a game.

* The offensive line is one of the best in the Big East.

* Louisville lost five games by a total of a touchdown or less.

* WR Doug Beaumont led the team in receptions per game and is also a threat on punt returns, ranking ninth in the country with an average of 15.3 yards.
