HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Hale leads Beechcroft over Independence in Division II

The Beechcroft Cougars of the Columbus City League North Division survived poor free throw shooting of 3-for-15 to beat City South Division foe Independence in Division II tournament action, 54-53 Monday night.

Khaleed Franklin scored 20 points for the Cougars, but the real hero was Maurice Hale who scored with 0.1 of a second left in regulation, as Beechcroft improves to 7-14.

The game at Dublin Scioto saw the 76ers rally from a 14-point deficit to take its first lead of the game. But Independence took a risk and fouled the Cougars four times in the last 20 seconds to put them in the 1-1 bonus.

Chris Johnson led the 76ers with 17 points and they end the season at 8-13.

(Beechcroft Cougars)

The Beechcroft Cougars traveled to Linden-McKinley and walked away with a 64-51 win.

Khaleed Franklin led the way with 30 points for the Cougars.

The Panthers were led by Patrick Ngene-Igwe with 15 and Dwight Edwards with 14 points.







Hali Robinson’s Brookhaven Bearcats continue to win games.

On Tuesday, they traveled to Centennial and won easily, 75-53.

The key to the game was that the Bearcats shut down the Stars with 11 points in the third quarter and 8 in the fourth quarter.

Randall Clarkson led Brookhaven with 26 points followed by 22 from Khalid King.

The Stars were led by Eric Cofer-Wilson with 13 points.







Independence 76ers

The Independence 76ers followed up a nice win at Columbus South on Friday night with an impressive win at Columbus West on Tuesday night, 90-68.

The West Cowboys remains winless on the season at 0-19, 0-13.

The 76ers put four players in double figures scoring: Dominic Ward with 22, Chris Johnson with 18, Terry Hopewell with 16 and Malik Breckenridge with 12.





Eastmoor Academy Warriors

Eastmoor Academy took control of the game from the beginning of the game as they led 13-4 at the end of the first quarter and 26-15 at the half en route to an easy 65-35 win over Columbus South.

Bryan Booker led the way for the Warriors with 16 and John Draper scored 13.

South was led my Oumar Diop with 18.

The pre-game show comes your way 20:00 ahead with Coach’s Corner with South head coach Ramon Spears and a feature on his two best players, sophomore point guard Aaron Mullins and junior center Ellis Williams.

The Bulldogs are making progress under Spears, a former assistant coach assistant coach at Walnut Ridge. They’ve gone from one win last year to five this year and could have at least four other wins. They’re 5-10, 1-10 in the South.

The 76ers are 4-12, 4-8 and are led by Terry Hopewell, Charles Sheard, Chris Johnson and Thomas Williams.

Both teams have some young talent and are looking to make a move upward in the future in the South Division.

Dayton falls to Saint Joseph’s in Philadelphia for sixth straight time

PHILADELPHIA – Chris Johnson tallied 17 points and eight rebounds and Kevin Dillard scored 17 as well to go with six assists as the Dayton Flyers lost to the Saint Joseph’s Hawks, 77-63.
Dayton saw its two-game win streak snapped and dropped 14-6 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Flyers also lost at Saint Joseph’s for the sixth consecutive time.
UD led most of the game until midway through the second half. That’s when the Hawks went on a 15-1 run to take a 58-46 lead.
In fact, the Hawks scored 50 points in the second half and shot 70 percent from the field going 21-of-30. The 70 percent field goal percentage from floor was a season high allowed by the Flyer defense.

Offensively in the game, Dayton shot 35 percent from the field but went 7-for-27 from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Saint Joseph’s had only five turnovers and shot 53 percent from the field.
UD led 32-27 at the half thanks in part to Johnson’s 12 points. It was a season high in the first half for Johnson as the Flyers shot just 33 percent from the field, but out-rebounded SJU 27-14.
On the glass, the Flyers lost for only the second time this season when out-rebounding their opponent.
Other contributors for Dayton included Josh Parker with eight points and three rebounds, Ralph Hill with seven points and Matt Kavanaugh with six points and three boards.
The Flyers return home on Saturday, Jan. 28 to host the Rhode Island Rams at 7 p.m. ET.

Tonight’s HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE matchup has the Marion-Franklin Red Devils invading the Independence 76ers in a Columbus City League South Division battle.

Marion-Franklin is 5-5, 4-3 in the South, won the first meeting at home on December 13, 60-52. Marcus Hampston scored 17 points to lead the way.

Independence is 3-9, 3-5 in the South, received 16 points from Chris Johnson in the first matchup.

The Red Devils have also beaten Groveport, South, West and Briggs.

The 76ers have wins over Linden, South and West.

On HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE, this is Marion-Franklin’s second appearance and they are 0-1 losing to Walnut Ridge last year. Independence will be making its third appearance on our network. They are 2-0 overall, beating Eastmoor Academy last year and Linden this year.
