Bears drop GM Angelo, offensive coordinator Martz; Smith stays

Jerry Angelo (Chicago Bears media guide photo)

The Chicago Bears were very successful under the guidance of general manager Jerry Angelo. They won four division titles and played in a Super Bowl in his 11 years.

But during the 2011 season the apple fell off the cart in a big way.

Angelo was fired following a team collapse in the wake of injuries to QB Jay Cutler and RB Matt Forte and drug scandal involving WR Sam Hurd.

The Bears also fired offensive coordinator Mike Martz and quarterbacks coach Shane Day.

But through it all, the blame for the Bears not reaching the playoffs does not fall at the feet of head coach Lovie Smith who keeps his job for another season.

The Chicago Bears got rid of running back Cedric Benson in favor of Thomas Jones.

The Bears are probably secretly thinking they made a mistake.

The 28-year-old Benson, a former first round pick, fourth overall by the Bears in the 2005 NFL Draft out of Texas, has flourished in his four years with the Cincinnati Bengals after leaving the Windy City.

The Midland, Texas native gained 57 yards on 16 carries to run his season total to 1,016 yards. It marks his third straight 1,000-yard season. He is the third Cincinnati Bengals running back to earn at least three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, joining Corey Dillon (1997-2002) and Rudi Johnson (2004-2006).

Benson played for the Bears from 2005-2007.
