Clippers’ Sarbaugh leads IL All-Stars against PCL tonight in Utah

Columbus Clippers manager Mike Sarbaugh will be leading the International League All-Stars against the Pacific Coast League All-Stars for the 2011 Triple-A All-Star Game.

The game, presented by Zions Bank and Workers Compensation Fund, will air live on the MLB Network TONIGHT, Wednesday, July 13 from Spring Mobile Ballpark in Salt Lake City, Utah, home of the PCL’s Salt Lake Bees.

The 44-year-old Sarbaugh, was named the 2010 Manager of the Year by Baseball America after he guided the Columbus Clippers to an IL title and Triple-A National Championship in his first season as a manager at the Triple-A level.

Sarbaugh is in his 22nd year in the Cleveland Indians organization, which includes five as a player, nine as a hitting coach and eight as a manager.

The Pennsylvania native has led four teams to their respective league’s championship as a manager.

64-year-old Dean Treanor, manager of the Indianapolis Indians and 52-year-old Richard Dotson, pitching coach for the Charlotte Knights will assist Sarbaugh with the IL stars.

Charlotte Knights takes series from Columbus with 10-7 win

The Charlotte Knights had been slumping offensively until they came to Columbus, the best team in the International League.

The Knights didn’t have trouble scoring runs as they pushed across, 13, 7 and 10.

Charlotte jumped out to an eight-run lead to win the series finale and rubber-game 10-7 on Thursday afternoon at Huntington Park.

Gaby Hernandez earned the win, allowing four earned runs in six innings. Clippers starter Joe Martinez took the loss.

Columbus’ bullpen continues to struggle as lefty Eric Berger was pounded for six runs (five earned) in one inning.

Hitting star for Columbus was outfielder Jerad Head, who went 3-for-5.

Clippers hold on to win 9-7 over Charlotte

For the second straight night, the Columbus Clippers rolled up a 6-0 lead but held on to escape 9-7 over the scrappy Charlotte Knights.

The two teams have played each other seven times in the past 12 days.

The game saw the return to the Clippers rotation of Jeanmar Gomez who was the winner and is 3-0. He was sent down on Monday by the Cleveland Indians and lead 6-0 after five innings.

Gomez’s totals include 5.2 innings pitched, 5 hits, 3 runs earned, 3 walks and 7 strikeouts.

The losing pitcher was Brandon Hyrick (1-3).

Columbus placed shortstop Jason Donald on the seven-day disabled list due to a left knee injury. Donald was injured Tuesday night on a hard slide at second base by Gookie Dawkins while trying to turn a double play.



Charlotte rallies from 6-0 deficit to win 13-7


COLUMBUS, OHIO — The Columbus Clippers are always the team that erases big deficits to produce comeback wins.

However, Tuesday night, they were the ones who blew a big lead and suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of a struggling Charlotte Knights team, 13-7.

After building a 6-0 lead through the three innings, the Clippers unraveled in front of a crowd of 5,647 at Huntington Park. Charlotte scored 13 runs in the final six innings of the game.

The Knights pounded Columbus pitching for 20 hits total, 16 after the third inning.

Clippers starter Corey Kluber started to get the ball up and the Knights took advantage to get back in the game. They won the game against Eric Berger and Carlton Smith by scoring six runs in the decisive seventh inning.

Right-fielder Dayan Viciedo was the big man for Charlotte by going 4-for-6 with a homer, double and 5 RBI’s.

Berger was the loser (0-1). Miguel Socolovich (2-0) was the winning pitcher, throwing two innings and striking out five.







Clippers win streak reaches a rare Baker’s dozen


The Columbus Clippers win streak has reached the lucky number of 13 or a Baker’s dozen in an 8-2 win over the Charlotte Knights on Tuesday night. The Hometown Heroes are an IL-best 21-5 overall and have a 5-game lead over Louisville in the West Division.

The Clippers offense came up big in the win. Columbus scored 8 runs in the ball game with the big number coming in the top of the seventh when the Clippers put up a five in that inning. The run support was all Clippers righthanders Zach McAllister, who in his longest outing of the year, went eight innings giving up only two runs, all earned, on seven hits while striking out five and walking one. He is now 5-0 on the season.

The losing pitcher was Charlotte righthander Freddy Dolsi who drops to 0-3.

The Clippers went an unbelievable 8-0 on the road trip.
