Cavs dominate Pacers, 90-76; fighting Knicks & Hawks for 8th spot in Eastern Conference playoffs

There was a time when everybody said the Cleveland Cavaliers could not win without All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving.

That statement has been proven wrong as peaking Cavs have won four of the past five games without Irving.

In the meantime, other players are stepping up. Dion Waiters, Luol Deng, Jarrett Jack, Tristan Thompson and Spencer Hawes have chipped in to lead the young team.

On Sunday afternoon, Cleveland dominated the East’s best team, the Indiana Pacers, 90-76.

Walters scored 19 points, Deng knocked down 15 and Thompson controlled the boards with 16 rebounds to help in chasing down the Atlanta Hawks for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Cavs, who are 14-12 since February 5, might be getting Irving back into action this week as they play at Orlando on Wednesday, at  Atlanta on Friday and host Charlotte on Saturday. The Hawks are injured and sputtering having lost six in a row.

Cleveland ended a nine-game losing streak to the Pacers.

Former UC star QB Tony Pike trying to make Bengals

Tony Pike played his high school football at Cincinnati Reading. He continue his career in college at Cincinnati engineering Brian Kelly’s fast paced-offensive sets.

As the Bearcats quarterback, Pike threw for 5,018 yards and 49 touchdowns and was drafted in the 6th round of the 2010 draft by the NFL’s Carolina Panthers.

But things never panned out in down in Charlotte, home of the Panthers. They also drafted Notre Dame’s Jimmy Claussen and then Auburn’s Cam Newton.

So, with an overflow of quarterbacks and the fact that Pike had elbow problems, the Panthers waived him last August and gave him an injury settlement.

Last week, Pike found him back in his hometown of Cincinnati trying to earn a spot on the Bengals roster by going through the team’s rookie mini-camp.

Pike had a third operation on his throwing arm and spent last season rehabbing, he felt confident to accept the Bengals invitation for a tryout.
