Funk wins Champions Tour event in Texas

Fred Funk edged out Tom Lehman by making a birdie on the final hole to win the Insperity Championship in The Woodlands, Texas.

The 55-year-old Funk is a University of Maryland graduate with 21 professional wins.

The two Champions Tour golfers were tied with one hole remaining, then Funk hit his approach on #18 to 2 feet. Lehman missed his birdie chance, and Funk then tapped in the 2-footer for his seventh win on the senior tour.

Funk finished with a 5-under-67.

Sluman, Couples tied for lead at Gulf Resort Classic

Jeff Sluman and Fred Couples are tied at the top of the Champions Tour leaderboard going into the final round of the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic in Saucier, Mississippi.

Sluman shot a 64, Couples shot a 70 and both are at 11-under-par 133.

The 54-year-old Sluman attended college at Monroe Community College and Florida State University.

He has 15 pro wins, 5 on the PGA Tour and 4 on the Champions Tour.

Couples, who is 52, has 53 professional wins.

Roberts wins Champions Tour’s Toshiba Classic by two strokes over three golfers

Loren Roberts shot a 69 and won the 2012 Toshiba Classic by two shots over three competitors on the Champions Tour.

The 56-year-old, who now has 26 career wins on tour, beat out Mark Calcavecchia (73), Tom Kite (69) and Bernhard Langer (70) in Newport Beach, California.

Roberts finished with a 2-under-par 205 for the tournament.

Know as the “Boss of the Moss”, the 6’2, 205-pound Roberts is a product of California Polytechnic State University. He turned pro in 1975 after his college dropped the golf program which had competed in NCAA Division II.

Pavin wins playoff in Champions Tour Florida event

Corey Pavin made a 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole at Broken Sound in Boca Raton, Florida, to hold off Peter Senior and take home the Allianz Championship for his first win on the Champions Tour.

Bernhard Langer (71) and Michael Allen (69) tied for third place, a shot ahead of Jay Haas (69) and John Cook (69).

Both Pavin and Senior shot a final-round total of 71 to finish tied at 11-under 205.

Senior forced the playoff with a birdie on the last hole of regulation, but his try for birdie in the playoff stopped an inch too short of the cup.

The 52-year-old Pavin, known as “Bulldog”, is a UCLA grad and has won 21 tournaments in four different golf tours, 15 of them on the PGA Tour.

Lehman chosen Champions Tour player of the year

Tom Lehman has now won player of the year honors in another tour.

Lehman recently was voted the Champions Tour player of the year after a 2011 season where he won three times and took home the Charles Schwab Cup. Lehman was the money’s list champion and the only player from the Champions Tour to earn more than $2 million.

No stranger to player of the year honors, Lehman won the award on the Hogan Tour. He was honored as the player of the year on the PGA Tour in 1996 when he won the money list and two tournaments, including the British Open for his lone major.
