Chelsea welcomes new interim coach in Benitez

Six months ago Chelsea won the Champions League  with Roberto Di Matteo as its manager.

DiMatteo won the other major trophy coveted by soccer teams overseas, the FA Cup. He was very successful coaching from March through November. But then it became what have you done for me lately and he was fired on November 21 after losing a match to Juventus, 3-0.

Now entering the picture as the new inerim manager, 52-year-old Rafael Benitez, who was a sweeper during his soccer career.

Benitez’s style is “hard to please”, “”ruthlessness”, “squad rotation” and “zonal marking” as former players have said.


 

Chelsea ties Barcelona; advances to Champions League finals

Chelsea FC eliminated defending champion Barcelona to reach the Champions League finals with a 2-2 tie, winning the semifinal on a 3-2 aggregate score despite playing most of the game a player down.

Chelsea, who is looking for its first Champions League title, will advance to the May 19 event at Munich, Germany.

They’ll face either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich who’ll play today. The homestanding Real Madrid has to overcome a 2-1 deficit.

Barcelona’s Messi continues goal-scoring barrage

Soccer star Lionel Messi has been on a scoring barrage.

Four days ago, he set a Champions League record with five goals in a game,

On Sunday, he scored the 49th and 50th goals of the season in Barcelona’s 2-0 win at Racing Santander in the Spanish League.

This is the second straight season that Messi has scored 50 goals. He is five short of the club record for goals of 235 by Cesar Rodriguez.

Lionel Messi to some soccer experts, fans and media, is the best soccer player of all-time at 24 years of age. But he has been voted as the world’s best player for the third year in a row.

The Barcelona and Argentina forward has received the FIFA Ballon d’Or Award for the 2011 season. He beat out his club teammate Xavier Hernandez and Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid for the most prestigious honor and individual can earn in the game.

He is the first player in the 21-history of the award to win it three straight years.

In 2011, Messi helped Barcelona win the Champions League, Spanish League and Club World Cup and two other champions.

Crew’s Mendoza designated player tag means hike in pay

The Columbus Crew has announced that forward Andres Mendoza will the designated player this season. That designation puts the Peruvian in a group of star players with huge contracts in Major League Soccer.

The 32-year-old Mendoza will be paid more than the $335,000 maximum salary-cap charge and a portion of his salary will be paid from the Crew’s money instead of the league provided $2.675 million team budget, according to published reports.

Mendoza, was signed in September 2010, scored two goals in 204 MLS minutes last season and two goals in four Champions League games.
