Michigan shuts out OSU before season-high 9,828 fans at VCA

Eventhough the Ohio State Buckeyes hockey team has gotten off to a solid start in the current CCHA season, the Michigan Wolverines is still the team to beat if they want to be league champions.

With Gordon “Red” Berensen on the bench since 1984, spanning 28 seasons and has a record of 743-346-75 and will always have the Wolverines in CCHA contention.

Michigan is working on a 22nd straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

Before a Friday night crowd of 9,828 at Value City Arena,  Michigan showed that they are the team to beat, by scoring twice in the first period on their way to a 4-0 win over the shocked Buckeyes.

Before the game, OSU was in first-place and ranked #2 in the nation.

The win by Michigan (13-8-4, 7-6-4-1 CCHA) have more experienced team than OSU, with 10 players on their roster who have been drafted by NHL teams.

Ohio State plays eight freshmen and are getting their feet wet with on-the-job-training in the rugged Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

Michigan, who got off to a slow start, has been playing well in its last eight games at 6-0-2. Ohio State, lost last weekend to Bowling Green in back-to-back shootouts.

Crane, Dries, Heeter leads hockey Buckeyes to 6-0 win over UA-F

The Ohio State men’s hockey team received big performances from Chris Crane, Danny Dries and Cal Heeter in a 6-0 shutout of CCHA rival Alaska-Fairbanks in Value City Arena.

With the series sweep, the Buckeyes picked up five points in two days.

Crane and Dries scored two goals apiece and Heeter stopped 27 shots to record his fourth career shutout.

The Buckeyes also killed off all eight UA-F power plays.

Ohio State improves its record to 4-3-1, 3-2-1-1 and UA-F drops to 3-3-2, 0-2-2-0.

Ohio State men’s hockey beats Michigan State on road

Chris Crane, Cal Heeter and Kevin Walrod were the heroes as the Ohio State men’s hockey team won in East Lansing, Michigan, beating Michigan State, 5-2.

Crane and Walrod each scored two goals and Heeter made 26 saves for the Buckeyes in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association contest.

The Buckeyes are 3-3, 2-2 in the CCHA.

Irish beat Buckeyes in men’s hockey, 5-2

The nation’s number-2 team, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish beat Ohio State in men’s hockey action Friday night, 5-2 in Columbus, Ohio.

OSU led 2-1 after the opening period on goals by senior Danny Dries.

The Irish are 2-1, 1-0 in the CCHA, while the Buckeyes drop to 1-2, 0-1 in the CCHA.

Notre Dame joining Hockey East; gets NBC TV deal

The Hockey East Conference is very strong. Its member’s include: Boston College, Boston University, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Massachusetts-Lowell, Merrimack, New Hampshire, Northeastern University, Providence College and Vermont.

The league just got stronger with the addition of Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish are leaving the lame-duck Central Collegiate Hockey Association for Hockey East beginning with the 2013-14 season. The program will get much-needed national exposure with a TV deal with NBC.

NBC, which has been airing Notre Dame football games for more than twenty years, will televise Irish hockey, and will also add the other Hockey East teams as needed.

Details of the TV deal are not completed.

Notre Dame, which has been a member of the CCHA since 1992, will become the 11th member of Hockey East.
