Crew manages 1-1 tie against always-tough Seattle Sounders FC

Emilio Renteria (courtesy of MLS)

Emilio Renteria scored on a second-half penalty kick allowing the Columbus Crew to tie the Seattle Sounders FC at 1-1 Saturday night at soggy Crew Stadium. The tie also allowed the Crew to move into a second place tie in the Eastern Conference.

Fredy Montero scored in the 7th minute for Seattle.

Montero put the Sounders ahead with a header, an assist from Erik Friberg for his cross from 35 yards to the center of the box. The goal was the fifth off a header this year for Seattle, which leads Major League Soccer in that category.

The Crew (3-1-4) has not lost since the first game, running its unbeaten streak to seven games and it stays undefeated at home (3-0-2). Renteria has scored all four Crew goals in its last three games, and his decisive kick came after Patrick Ianni was whistled for pulling down Chad Marshall on a corner kick by teammate Eddie Gaven.

Half of the Crew’s eight goals this season have come from the penalty shot.

* Attendance was 7,148.

* Conditions 55 degrees and rainy.

* Seattle is 3-0-2 when scoring first.

* The Sounders are fifth in the Western Conference at 3-3-4 for 13 points.

* Seattle has been consistent, scoring 6 goals on the road and 6 at home.

* The Crew are 3-1-4, good for 4th in the Eastern Conference with 13 points.

* It was pointed out that Andres Mendoza of the Crew is making $595,000 and is not a starter, but that the Crew did not want to pay a similar or higher salary to keep proven star Guillermo Barros Schelotto.

*  Columbus is 3-0-2 at home.

* The Crew all-time vs. Seattle is 2-0-3.

* Crew Soccer Academy standouts Wil Trapp and Ben Swanson have been called into their respective age group U.S. National Team camps. Trapp, from Gahanna, will leave for Portugal on May 19 and will participate in a series of matches against the Portugal, Finland and Holland U18 teams.

Swanson has already joined the U.S. U14 camp at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, and will play in a series of exhibitions against Chivas, Arsenal, LA Galaxy, Cosmos West, Pateadores and the Irvine Strikers.

Crew, Chivas USA play to a scoreless draw

(courtesy of MLS)

Soccer’s hardest working team, The Columbus Crew haven’t been able to handle Chivas USA like they have some of the other members of Major League Soccer, especially when they play in the Los Angeles suburb of Carson, California.

Columbus’ only win over Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center in Carson was in 2005, when the team was in its first year and won only 4 of 32 matches.

The Crew did not win this past weekend, but broke a five-game losing skid at Chivas USA with the 0-0 draw.

The match marked the third straight shutout for the Crew’s defense, which held Chivas USA to six shots.

The Crew is 1-1-2 while Chivas is still winless at 0-2-2 on the season.

Goalkeepers, William Hesmer of Columbus and Adam Kennedy of Chivas were tough to beat and did not crack under any pressure.
