The small town of Richwood, Ohio is very proud of their football team, the North Union Wildcats.

Most of you probably wonder where Richwood, Ohio is? Richwood is actually a village in the northern portion of Union County, a population of 2,156 people according to the 2000 U.S. Census. It is located between Marysville and Marion on State Route 37.

They have a very good football team that plays in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference, Red Division which includes: Buckeye Valley, Marion Elgin, Highland and Marion River Valley.

The Wildcats are so good that they’re the Number 1 team in the latest Division V poll at 7-0. But not far behind are several other teams around the Columbus, Ohio area: Fredericktown, West Jefferson, Fairbanks, Grandview and this week’s opponent for North Union, the Cardington Pirates.

Our feature guest, Warren Shields is one of the leaders of the team.

He was the 2009 Co-Defensive Player of the Year for Division V. Shields had 115 tackles, 20 for losses. Also in 2009, playing in the Wing-T formation, he rushed for 682 yards and 8 touchdowns.

At 6’3, 180, his head football coach, Jesse Miller, says Shields has the ‘AMAZING WILL TO WIN.” Coach Miller says that he has speed, strength and explosiveness that you very rarely see on the Division V level. Believe it or not, there has not been any NCAA Division I interest for Warren as of yet. But there’s still time for the recruiters to notice him.

Speaking of the North Union football team. Between 1976 and 2005, they posted only three winning seasons. But since 2005, they produced five straight. In 2006, the Wildcats were 6-4, their first winning season in seven years. When head coach Jesse Miller came aboard in 2008, they were 7-3. In 2009, they made the jump to 10-1, 9-0 and first in the MOAC Red Division and played in their first-ever playoff game at home. But guess who the opponent was? None other than that football-factory known as St. Henry, who beat North Union, 28-3.

Warren Shields is having another solid season for North Union. On defense over 70 tackles, 7 for losses, 3 sacks, 2 caused fumbles and a fumble recovery. On offense, he has rushed over 600 yards, a 6.4 yards per carry and 10 touchdowns.
