Canucks’ Luongo posts 65th career shutout in win over Edmonton

Roberto Luongo stopped 19 shots on Friday night and recorded his 65th career shutout as the Vancouver Canucks won their sixth game in a row, 4-0 over the Edmonton Oilers.

The 34-year-old Loongo, a native of Canada, has also played for Florida Panthers and the New York Islanders.

The 6’3, 217-pound goalie has a career record of 348-289-33.

Rogers Cup winners are Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams


Serena Williams won her third Rogers Cup women’s championship by dominating unseeded Romanian Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-0 in Toronto.

Williams, who currently is ranked #1 in the world, has 54 WTA titles and a singles record of 610-111, good for 84.6%.

On the men’s side, Rafael Nadal beat Milos Raonic 6-2, 6-2 in the Rogers Cup final in Montreal.

The loss spoiled Raonic’s bid to become the first Canadian winner in the 55 years of the prestigious tournament.

Nadal beat Novak Djokovic in Saturday’s semifinal match.

McGuire leads USA Baseball over Canada

Reese McGuire led the United States to a 6-2 win over Canada in the under-18 world baseball championship in Seoul, South Korea.

McGuire collected two hits and two RBI’s in the game.

MASON, OHIO — ATP star Milos Raonic is a rare Canadian tennis player who was not born in the country.

The 6’5, 195-pound player was born in Podgorica, Montenegro back in 1990, but his family moved to Canada when he was just 3-years old.

He started playing the game of tennis at age 8. He never was interested in hockey, the national pastime in Canada.

Raonic turned pro in 2008 and has been a rising star ever since and is so popular, that there is a tennis arena named after him in Toronto.

The Canadian won his match on Tuesday over last week’s Rogers Cup Finalist Richard Gasquet, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Raonic used 12 aces and won 83 percent of his first serve points to control the matches. His next opponent is Marcus Baghdatis, who is from Cyprus.

Raonic is having a good year so far, he broke into the top 20 of the South African Airways ATP Rankings for the first time ever on Monday, placing at 19th.

The 21-year came into 2012 with a singles record of 65-39. His ranking at the end of July was 383 in the world. This season, he has won two tournaments and been a runner-up once.
