Commissioner Goodell says NFL playoffs won’t expand in 2013

Roger Goodell (NFL photo)

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said on Monday that the league will not be adding any teams to the playoffs for the 2013 season.

There had been talk and speculation that the NFL would expand past the current 12-team format.

The other topic at the owners meetings in Phoenix yesterday was that there is a scheduling conflict with the Baltimore Ravens opening at home due to the Baltimore Orioles game on the same date.

The Ravens play at M&T Bank Stadium and the Orioles at Camden Yards, just across the streek and the two stadiums share the same parking lots.

Traditionally, the NFL season opens with the Super Bowl winners playing host on the Thursday night after Labor Day.

The Ravens will not have that opportunity unless the Orioles move their night game on September 5 to the afternoon.

The NFL will not have the option of using September 4 because it is the first night of the Jewish holiday, Rosh Hashanah.

Goodell says he has twice talked to MLB commissioner Bud Selig to help get a resolution with the Orioles, but has not heard anything back.

The NFL has moved opening nights before. Last year, the opener was moved to Wednesday avoiding a conflict with President Barack Obama’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention.

In four baseball games last week, Markakis batted .429 (6-for-14) with two doubles, two home runs, four RBI’s and five runs scored on his way to earning his first career A.L. Player of the Week honor, the first Oriole to be awarded the award since Luke Scott on July 25, 2010.

The six-year veteran tied for first in the league in home runs, runs scored and slugging percentage (1.000), and was second with 14 total bases.

The 27-year-old reached a career milestone during a Friday game against the Cleveland Indians at Camden Yards, collecting his 1,000th career hit with a third-inning single to become the 14th player to reach that plateau with the Orioles.

Markakis is the seventh overall pick in the first round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft.

Baltimore introduces Buck Showalter as their new manager

Buck Showalter, a former Columbus Clippers player was introduced as the new manager of the Baltimore Orioles on Monday.

He told media gathered at his introductory press conference that he pledges to restore the luster and winning ways back into an Orioles franchise that has fallen on hard times over several years. Plus, the team is in a tough division, the AL East which has the Yankees, Boston, Tampa Bay and Toronto, all whom are better than Baltimore.

The 54-year-old Showalter, has built contending teams before with the Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Yankees and Texas Rangers.

The Orioles, 32-73, the worst team in the majors this season, will be a monumental challenge for Showalter, who is known for his no-non sense, attention to detail, preparation and ability to work with young talent.

Showalter was hired last week, but his first game will be Tuesday (today) against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Camden Yards.
