Texas A&M chooses Kennedy to replace Turgeon

Billy Kennedy has been named the new men’s basketball coach at Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.

He takes over for Mark Turgeon, who resigned last week to take over for the retiring Gary Williams at Maryland.

Despite Texas A&M not being in session, several returning players and recruits showed up to support the coach.

Kennedy, who is 47, compiled a 107-53 record at Murray State. He led the Racers to the round of 32 in the NCAA tournament in 2010, where they lost to two points to Butler University, the eventual national runner-up.

The Aggies have played in six straight NCAA’s, four under Turgeon and two under Billy Gillespie before that.

Texas A&M return their top scorers, guard Khris Middleton and forward David Loubeau, and seven of their top 10 players from a team that lost its opening round game in the NCAA Tournament to Florida State.
