Columbus City League South Division: Perez, Hughes lead Eastmoor Academy to 36-9 win over Briggs

The Eastmoor Academy Warriors, Archie Griffin’s alma mater, have consistently been contenders for the Columbus City League South Division crown.

However, last year they slipped to 6-4, 5-2.

Before the season, head coach Jim Miranda decided to change from a two-back, outrun the defense team to a spread out the defense and utilize their stable of running backs in various ways through the air.

Last night against visiting Briggs in a 36-9 win, Martine Perez and Jahmal Hughes led the way.

Perez rushed for three touchdowns on 16 carries for 161 yards and Hughes passed for two more scores.

The Bruins, who drop to 1-4, 1-1, were led by Maleik Gore who was a workhorse running the ball 42 times for 158 yards.

The Warriors improve to 3-2, 2-0.

CITY LEAGUE BASKETBALL: Independence squeezes past Briggs, 70-67

Two of the most-improved teams in the City League South played Friday night, Briggs at Independence.

The Bruins started the game sluggishly, falling behind 23-16 at the end of one quarter and 42-30 at the half.

Briggs came alive in the third quarter and moved ahead 53-52 heading into the fourth.

From there, the 76ers took control outscoring Briggs 18-14 to end the game on top 70-67.

Jeremy Campbell led the 76ers with 16 points.

Briggs, who can shoot three’s pretty well, were led by Kiante Woods with 21.

Independence has a record of 5-12, 3-9, while Briggs is 8-11, 5-8.

Marion-Franklin Red Devils (9-8, 8-4) visits the Bruin Den at Briggs High School (8-9, 5-7) at 7:00 p.m.in the Columbus City League South Division.

We’ll be on the air 10 minutes before the game with our usual information. The game will be archived forever on that page to listen to anytime.

The Red Devils under Scott Williams defeated Tony Rice’s Bruins the first time around, 84-61. A 22-point third quarter allowed Marion-Franklin to put the game away.

Africentric scored an 89-45 win over South Urban Academy.

Fuquan Tucker led the Nubians with 15 points.

 

Marion-Franklin won at home over Eastmoor Academy, 62-55.

Dominique Cartier led the Red Devils with 17 points.

 

Walnut Ridge earned a 61-47 win over Independence, 61-43.

Slick-shooting guard Roy Alexander led the Scots with a 16-point performance.

 

Briggs beat West, 68-56.

Charles Westbrook led the Bruins with 14 points.

Tonight’s HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE will be in the Columbus City League South Division and it’ll be a huge game.

The Walnut Ridge Scots (7-0, 4-0) will travel to Briggs (6-2, 3-0). Game time is 7 pm, pre-game at 6:40 right here on the website. LISTEN LIVE by clicking here.

The Scots defeated arch-rival Eastmoor Academy on Friday and Briggs beat Independence so both teams come in with momentum.

Walnut Ridge under Jason Bates has also defeated Thomas Worthington, South, Independence, West, Pickerington North and Dublin Scioto.

The Bruins of Briggs are coached by Tony Rice, who is the school’s all-time points and assists leader, has beaten Franklin Heights, Groveport, Olentangy, West, South and Independence.
