Baylor University Bears center Brittney Griner, who averaged 23.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 5.2 blocked shots per game this season, was named the Associated Press women’s basketball Player of the Year.

Just a junior, the Houston native is 6’8, 208-pounds, wears a men’s size 17 or 18 shoe and has a arm span of 86″.

Griner is the first Baylor player to win the award. She received 36 votes Saturday from the 40-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25.

Griner’s win ended a run of three straight seasons that a Connecticut player has been player of the year, Maya Moore won the award last season.

Lady Bears head coach Kim Mulkey was selected the AP Coach of the Year.

Mulkey has guided her team to an undefeated season, and Baylor needs one more win to become the first team in NCAA history to win 40 games in a season. They’ll play Notre Dame in the women’s championship game on Tuesday night in Denver.
