Ohio State Gameday: Buckeyes open 122nd season of football against Akron Zips

The Akron Zips make the 2-hour drive down Interstate 71 South to Columbus, Ohio this afternoon to take on #18/16 Ohio State at venerable Ohio Stadium.

Game time is 12 noon Eastern Time with ESPN airing the contest.

OSU is 6-1 all-time against the Zips. The Buckeyes won the last meeting with Akron, 20-2 on September 8, 2007 at Ohio Stadium.

The game will mark the official debut of Luke Fickell as the Buckeyes head coach. The Columbus, Ohio native is the sixth former OSU assistant coach to assume the school’s head coaching position.

The Zips finished the 2010 season at 1-11, but will have 13 returning starters on offense and defense along with 35 letterwinners.

Rob Ianello is in his second year as the Akron head coach after serving as an assistant at Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Arizona and Alabama.

Defensively, junior linebacker Brian Wagner is the leader. A pre-season all-MAC selection, returns after leading the Zips with 130 tackles.

Sophomore transfer Clayton Moore has been named the Akron starting quarterback.

Moore who was signed by Ole Miss, arrives at Akron from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College where he completed 155-of-257 passes for 2,395 yards and 23 touchdowns last year while leading the Bulldogs the JUCO state championship and earned MVP honors at the Mississippi Bowl.

AKRON-OSU GAME DAY: Zips’ Wagner on Nagurski Watch List

Akron Zips junior linebacker Brian Wagner is one of 87 college football players around the country named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List.

Wagner led Akron in tackles each of the past two seasons (132 in 2009, 130 in 2010) and has been on the starting unit in all 24 games of his college career.

His 10.8 tackles per game in 2010 ranked tied for 12th nationally and fourth-best in the Mid-American Conference.
