Braxton Miller has surgery on throwing shoulder as OSU Spring Football looms

Braxton Miller, meeting with the media on Wednesday night, will probably have limited participation during spring football ( photo)

It seemed like yesterday that the Ohio State Football team ended its season the Orange Bowl back in January.

Well, don’t look now, Buckeyes Spring Football is just around the corner and everybody’s favorite quarterback may not participate.

Spring practice will begin on March 4, this first of 15 practices which will culminate with the annual Spring Game on April 12 at Ohio Stadium.

Buckeyes QB Braxton Miller, according to a football program spokesperson, underwent a minor surgical outpatient procedure on his throwing shoulder at the Wexner Medical Center. The injury was believed to have occured in January 3 Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida.

The procedure could limit Miller’s participation during the upcoming spring practices.

This will give other quarterback’s a chance in trying to replace the popular and graduated Kenny Guiton as the backup to Miller. The candidates include Cardale Jones, J.T. Barrett and Stephen Collier.

It is believed that Jones has the leg-up on the competition.

OSU SPRING GAME: Miller & Scarlet team beats Gray, 20-14

COLUMBUS, OHIO — The Urban Meyer era was ushered in on a chilly, overcast day at venerable Ohio Stadium as 81,112 faithful fans braved the elements and were entertained with a 20-14 win by the Scarlet over the Gray.

Braxton Miller passed the ball well in the new spread offense

Running back Rod Smith ran 7 yards for the game-winning touchdown with 5:29 to go for the Scarlet team.

Defensive back Christian Bryant sealed the game by picking off Gray quarterback Kenny Guiton with 2:52 to play to thwart a comeback attempt.

Eventhough Braxton Miller said in the postgame that fans and media only witnessed “30 percent of the offense”, the Scarlet rolled up 305 total yards and the Gray 227. 532 yards is not pretty good for only 30 percent. It makes you wonder how good the offense could be with “100 percent” of it in place?

Miller led the Scarlet stats going 24 of 31 with one interception and 258 yards.

Michael Thomas emerged as a wide receiver threat catching 12 balls for 131 yards for the Scarlet. Teammate Chris Fields caught 5 passes for 72 yards.

Kenny Guiton proved that he is capable of backing up Miller

Backup QB Kenny Guiton had a nice game throwing the ball as well for the Gray team. He was 16 of 24 with 185 yards, interception and a touchdown.

His wide receivers were equally as good. Philly Brown caught seven passes for 90 yards and Devin Smith caught a 28-yard TD pass.

The defenses sacked the QB seven times on the quick-whistle to avoid injuries.

Leading tacklers in the game include Adam Griffin with 9 and Orhian Johnson with 7 to lead the Gray. Ryan Shazier with 7 led the Scarlet.

Forgotten QB Graham transfers from Ohio State

Taylor Graham (courtesy of OSU athletics)

When second generation quarterback Taylor Graham arrived at Ohio State, his height at 6’3 and weight of 230 and credentials as a pure dropback passer with a cannon-arm brought fans and media to think back to the days of his dad, Kent Graham from 1990-91 who possessed those same skills.

But in this day and age of college football, most teams want a speedy, mobile quarterback that can escape pressure. If he’s 6’4, fine. But pure-pocket passers are not the norm today.

With Braxton Miller and Kenny Guiton at OSU, redshirt freshman Taylor Graham decided a few weeks ago to get a release from his scholarship, which he was granted and says he is transferring to the University of Hawaii.

It’s not surprising that Graham is transferring from OSU, but the move to Hawaii could be the answer to his career. The Rainbows recently hired renowned and highly respected offensive coordinator Norm Chow as its new head coach.

The younger Graham says that the pro-style offense fits his style the best and that Chow is the answer.

He says that he hates to leave Ohio State but its time to move on in his college career.

OHIO STATE AT MICHIGAN GAMEDAY: Buckeyes hang tough but can’t overcome Robinson, Wolverines

ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN — Coming into Saturday’s rivalry game between Ohio State and Michigan, most fans and media felt that the Wolverines would run away with game considering the Buckeyes troubles on offense and their injury-riddled defense which has had troubles stopping teams at times this season.

But against Michigan, the Buckeyes had very little trouble moving the ball. They totaled 372 total offensive yards, 137 on the ground and 235 through the air and were 3-for-3 in the red zone.

But the Wolverines were slightly better as they finally ended OSU’s 7-game winning streak in the series with a 40-34 win. The game was one of the most exciting in the series. Most of the games have been blowouts by Ohio State.

The OSU defense could not contain Wolverine QB Denard Robinson who accounted for 5 touchdowns, was 14 of 17 passing for 167 yards and at one point in the game completed 11 straight passes. He ran 26 times for 170 yards with 2 TD’s and lost a fumble.

In this game, the Buckeyes did not have Terrelle Pryor and Jim Tressel and Michigan’s quarterback was better than OSU’s signal-caller for a change. That was the difference.

Michigan’s offense was unstoppable at times. They totaled 444 total yards, 277 on the ground, 167 passing and were 4-for-4 in the red zone.

This game was coming-out party of sorts for Buckeyes’ freshman quarterback Braxton Miller. He showed improvement in his passing. Yes, he did miss on some deep balls, but he was 14 for 25 for 235 yards with 2 TD’s and 1 interception. On the ground, Miller rushed 16 times for 100 yards and scored a touchdown.

After the game rumors started heating up that Urban Meyer is set to become the next coach at Ohio State and that there would be a team meeting on Sunday night around 9 pm.
