Super Saver loses to Lookin At Lucky in the Preakness

compiled from staff and wire reports

The horse racing drought continues for the Triple Crown. For the 32nd year in a row, we all have to wait another year in the continuing record of Triple Crown failures; there will be no sweep of racing’s most coveted prize for winning the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness and The Belmont Stakes.

The only horse who could’ve headed to Belmont Stakes on June 5 with a chance at the Triple Crown was Super Saver, the Kentucky Derby winner who was a 19-10 favorite when a field of 12 3-year-olds went postward Saturday at the 135th Preakness at Pimlico in Baltimore. It became clear to all in attendance as the horses neared the quarter pole that Super Saver was not going to win on Saturday May 15, 2010.

Super Saver broke from the start very well and was in a comfortable position to giving the closest chase to front-running First Dude down the stretch the first time and into the turn of the 1 3/16-mile race. From that point on, Super Saver was flat, and his rivals swarmed right past him and he finished eighth, beaten by 11 1/2 lengths by the victorious Lookin At Lucky, allowing Affirmed in 1978 to remain the most recent Triple Crown winner.

The 32-year drought is the longest since the Triple Crown became recognized as a series in the 1930′s, with the previous longest drought being the 25-year gap between Citation (1948) and Secretariat (1973). There have been 11 Triple Crown winners since Sir Barton in 1919.

Owner Bob Baffert says his horse, Lookin At Lucky, will not be entered in the Belmont Stakes.
