Fans of the Florida Gators Men’s Basketball program expected a big-name coach to be hired replacing Billy Donovan, who bolted for the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Florida administration feels that they have hired the right man.

On Thursday, Florida hired an up-and-coming coach in 38-year-old Michael White, from Louisiana Tech.

White received a six-year contract worth $12 million dollars total and $2 million a year.

White, a native of Dunedin, Florida, also has coached at Jacksonville State and Ole Miss as an assistant.

White is an SEC guy. He played from 1995 to 1999 for the Mississippi Rebels. He became a starter in the eighth game of his freshman year and remained a starter for the remainder of his four years at Ole Miss. During White’s college career, he had 370 assists, the 6th highest total in Ole Miss history. He also led his team to two SEC Western Division Titles, three consecutive NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournaments (1997, 1998 and 1999), and the first NCAA Tournament victory in the history of Ole Miss.

At the 100-game mark, he had the highest winning percentage and the most wins of any coach in Louisiana Tech history (101-40 .716). In addition to that the Bulldogs have not lost a home game since December 4, 2013. Currently that is the 4th longest active Division 1 home court win streak.

New University of Dayton head basketball coach Archie Miller continues to build his own staff.

He has added 41-year-old Tom Ostrom from the University of Arkansas basketball program.

Ostrom spent four seasons at Arkansas on John Pelphrey’s staff. The Razorbacks were 69-59 during those years with one NCAA appearance. Ostrom was instrumental in recruting the seventh-ranked class in the country this season.

Ostrom also was Pelphrey’s right-hand man in the three seasons before coaching at Arkansas. Ostrom was an assistant to Pelphrey at South Alabama from 2004-2007. USA played in the NCAA and NIT after enjoying the largest turnaround in college basketball in 2006, improving from 10 wins in 2004-05 to 24 wins and the Sun Belt title in 2005-06.

Prior to his job at USA, Ostrom spent seven years under Billy Donovan at Florida, the fist five as administrative assistant/video coordinator (1998-2002) and the final two as an assistant coach (2003-04). While at Florida, the Gators played in the NCAA Tournament the last six years, advanced to the Sweet 16 in twice and reached the NCAA championship game in 2000.

A 1997 University of Minnesota graduate with a degree in Sports Management and Human Development, Ostrom worked in the Golden Gopher men’s basketball program as an undergrad while Clem Haskins was the head coach.
