Everyone figured that Mark Martin would be on the NASCAR Hall of Fame ballot in his first year of eligibility (2014).

Martin, winner of 96 NASCAR races in all divisions, failed to make the ballot.

The ballot does include Bill Elliott and Terry Labonte, a pair of Cup champions along with Mike Stefanik and Buddy Baker. Engine builder and team owner Robert Yates also was nominated.

NASCAR RACE #17 PREVIEW: Today, Michigan International Speedway, 1 PM on TNT

Michigan International Speedway (file photo)

The NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit pays a visit to the Midwest Sunday (today) for the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan.

Race time on the TNT Network is 1 p.m.

Brooklyn, Michigan is located in the scenic Irish Hills area of Southwestern Michigan. The 2000 U.S. Census had the town’s population at 1,176 people. The villagae was founded in 1832 by Calvin Swain who named it Swainsville but the town council changed the name to Brooklyn in 1836.

The 400 mile race is 200 laps on the 2-mile race track.

Located on a 1,400-acre site, the wide, saucer-shaped oval surface allows the drivers to choose their grooves, which is a combination of balance, using downforce and grip. The drivers can run low, high or in the middle and it’s easy to pass.

The top drivers at MIS when it comes to winning includes: Bill Elliott with 7, Mark Martin with 5 and there are four drivers with two wins each, Greg Biffle, Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards.

In reviewing the 2010 Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 race, Denny Hamlin was very dominant, opening up a lead of nine seconds before a caution flag came out due to debris on lap 182. Hamlin led the race for 123 of the 200 laps to beat out Kasey Kahne and Kurt Busch.
