Possibility of Big Ten hockey conference a future reality

(clipart by OCAL)

There are rumors over the internet and radio talk shows that when the Big Ten Conferences athletic directors meet this coming Friday, one of the topics will be the formation of a Big Ten hockey league.

Penn State announced several weeks ago that they’ll be starting a men’s hockey program on the varsity level for 2013. When that becomes a reality, the league would have the NCAA-required six teams for conference competition.

Their are three Big Ten schools that compete in the CCHA, Central Collegiate Hockey Association: Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State.

Two Big Ten schools play in the WCHA, Western Collegiate Hockey Association: Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Several athletics directors feel that the Big Ten should have their teams playing in their own conference.

Putting Big Ten Conference hockey on the Big Ten Network would make the network even more popular and stronger.

Ohio State point guard Aaron Craft scored a career-high 19 points while dishing out seven assists against just one turnover in Ohio State’s home win over Penn State this past Saturday to earn the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week award.

Ohio State freshman have earned the league’s freshman of the week award 10 times this season with Jared Sullinger claiming eight awards. Deshaun Thomas and Craft each have one. Sullinger had a streak of six-consecutive weeks winning the award after Thomas was named on November 29.

The 77th Annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Football Classic will feature the University of Arkansas, from the Southeastern Conference, against the Ohio State Buckeyes, from the Big Ten Conference, tonight January 4.

The game will be played in the Louisiana Superdome at 8:30 p.m. and will be televised by ESPN. This will be the first meeting between the two programs.

This will be the sixth Sugar Bowl appearance by the Razorbacks, the seventh-most in history. However, this will be Arkansas’ first trip to the Sugar Bowl since 1980. Ohio State will be making its fourth trip to the Sugar Bowl, and its first since 1999. The Buckeyes also made an appearance following the 2007 season, battling LSU in the 2008 BCS Championship Game hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Arkansas is 1-4 in its five previous appearances, while the Buckeyes are 1-2. Schools that are currently in the Big Ten have a 2-7 all-time record in the sugar Bowl, while SEC teams have registered a 33-34-1 record.

Overall, the Razorbacks have made 42 bowl appearances, winning 12 games.

The Buckeyes are making their 42nd bowl appearance, having 19 wins.

While this is the first meeting between Arkansas and Ohio State, the Razorbacks have played six games against Big Ten teams, posting a 1-5 mark (defeated Northwestern in 1981). Ohio State has a 7-11-2 all-time mark against SEC teams.
