University of Illinois’ Assembly Hall renamed to State Farm Center

The University of Illinois has sold the naming rights for Assembly Hall to State Farm Insurance Company.

The State Farm Center is the second arena in the Big Ten Conference with a corporate sponsor. In 2011, Pinnacle Bank purchased the naming rights to Nebraska’s arena for $11.2 million over 25 years.

State Farm has its headquarters in Bloomington, Illinois, 50 miles from Champaign, home of the University of Illinois.

The 30-year, $60-million agreement, for the home of the Fighting Illini basketball teams, will take effect immediately.

The 50-year-old arena is undergoing a complete renovation and will be completed in the fall of 2016.

Wolverines QB Devin Gardner seeking 5th year of eligibility

Michigan Wolverines junior quarterback Devin Gardner is seeking a fifth year of eligibility says his head coach Brady Hoke.

Hoke says that all of the documentation needed for Gardner’s medical red-shirt is being looked over by the Big Ten Conference.

Gardner was recruited as a quarterback by the Wolverines but was moved to wide receiver this season to be on the field at the same time with Denard Robinson. When the play-making Robinson missed several games with a right elbow injury, Gardner took over the QB reins and piloted the team successfully until last Saturday’s 26-21 loss at arch-rival Ohio State. He started the last four games of this season.

Gardner’s year that he is trying to get back is his freshman year when he was limited to three games due to a back injury.

If the NCAA and Big Ten allows his medical hardship, Gardner will be eligible to play in 2013 and 2014.

The Big Ten Conference has confirmed that even though both Ohio State and Penn State banned from playing in the Big Ten Championship Game and bowl games due to NCAA sanctions, both are still eligible to compete for the Leaders Division title and receive a trophy for the 2012 season.

Bowl-eligible win total moving from six to 7 wins in future

The standard for becoming bowl-eligible has been 6-6 over the past few years, but that is about to change.

6-6 is acceptable to some college football teams who know they can’t challenge for a conference title, but those types of records are hurting bowl games and fans aren’t willing to travel to see a .500 team in a bowl game.

In the process, schools have to eat tickets and lose money in the process.

The topic last week at the Big Ten Conference’s Spring meetings was 7-5 is move attractive to a team’s fan base than 6-6.

Last year, the Big Ten had four 6-6 teams that played in bowl games.

The 7-5 record to get to a bowl will be the benchmark in the future.

Ohio State is celebrating 100 years as a member of the Big Ten Conference in men’s basketball in 2012.

The Buckeyes finished 6th in the 1913 conference standings, the first season of league play.

With 99 seasons passing, OSU has won 19 Big Ten regular-season championships with 23 NCAA tournament appearances, one national titles in 1960, and nine trips to the Final Four.

Eight former coaches and players are members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame while there are almost 50 student-athletes who have been drafted by the NBA, including 22 in the first round.
