The Cincinnati Bengals did the unthinkable, going from a 3-5 start that included a 4-game losing streak to Cleveland, Miami, Pittsburgh and Denver to winning 6 of the next 7 to gain the playoffs with a 9-6 record.

The Bengals have one game left, at home next Sunday vs. Baltimore.

Sunday’s win at Heinz Field, which has not been kind to the Bengals over the years, was a welcome sight. The 13-10 victory ended the Bengals’ 10-game losing streak against Pittsburgh and Baltimore dating back to the 2009 season, when Cincinnati won dominated the AFC North Division with a 6-0 record.

NOTES:

***Bengals DT Geno Atkins earned 2.5 sacks on Sunday to increase his season total to 13.

***With four sacks against Ben Roethlisberger and Pittsburgh on Sunday, Cincinnati leads the NFL with 47.

***The Bengals tied a franchise record by winning six games on the road this season.

***There have been 121 NFL teams since 1990 to start a season in the first 8 games by going 3-5 and then make the playoffs; the Bengals are only the eighth team to do so.

***Cincinnati became the sixth NFL team since 2005 to make the postseason four times.

***The Bengals under Marvin Lewis have made progress, but are 0-3 in the playoffs.

Pittsburgh escapes hungry Bengals, 24-17

Ben Roethlisberger leads the Steelers

Bengals hung tough Sunday against the veteran Steelers

CINCINNATI, OHIO — Pittsburgh beat Cincinnati, 24-17 to take control of the AFC North on Sunday afternoon. But the defending AFC champions had to fight hard to earn the win.

All week leading up to the game between the Steelers and Bengals, the national media kept saying that rookie QB Andy Dalton would not be able to do much against Dick LeBeau’s blitzing defense.

The poised rookie from TCU had no problems at all. He handled everything thrown his way. He had no sacks, completed 15 of 30 passes with 2 touchdowns. He did suffer two fourth quarter interceptions during the Bengals comeback attempt, but they were rookie mistakes that he’ll learn from.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was asked his opinion of Dalton. “He’s a good player. He spins the ball really well, especially with the wind. He was spinning it really well. He seems very cerebral. He knows what’s going on out there. I think that he is playing the best of all the rookie quarterbacks. The other guys have numbers, but he makes some great throws. We were on the sideline, Byron Leftwich, Charlie Batch and I and we were saying ‘Oh, that’s a good throw.’ He makes good throws, he anticipates and I think he’s playing really well. I told him, ‘We’ll see you in a couple weeks, but you’re playing lights out.”

Roethlisberger was sacked five times by the Bengals defense, but completed 21 of 33 for 245 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. The interception was not his fault. Tight end Heath Miller bobbled a potential first down ball that Bengals cornerback Leon Hall picked off.

Rodgers leads Green Bay to Super Bowl championship

Aaron Rodgers (file photo)

The Green Bay Packers just finished an improbable run on Sunday.

The team won every game in the playoffs away from the friendly confines of Lambeau Field. They took down Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago and the Pittsburgh Steelers,

Aaron Rodgers, the former understudy of Brett Favre, led the Packers to a 31-25 win in Super Bowl XLV in Arlington, Texas.

The Pack is Back, began to come alive again after the Super Bowl ended as Green Bay recaptured the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named for their legendary caoch who won the first two Super Bowls, for the first time since winning the NFL title game 14 years ago.

Rodgers was voted the game’s MVP.

The Packers ended the season at 14-6, the Steelers 14-5.

The Packers, the #6 seed in the NFC became the second team seeded with that number, to win a championship joining the 2005 Steelers as the other team to do so.

Rodgers threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns in building up a 21-3 lead on Pittsburgh and hanging on.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger wasn’t sharp in the game, throwing two interceptions, one being returned for a touchdown. He was 25 of 40 for 263 yards and two touchdowns.

AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: Steelers know how to get to Super Bowl; holds off Jets

The one thing about the Pittsburgh Steelers, they know how to get to the Super Bowl.

For the third time in six years, the Steelers are going to the NFL’s title game to play this time around, the Green Bay Packers.

The Steelers beat the New York Jets 24-19 to play in Super Bowl XLV on February 6, 2011.

Pittsburgh turned back the Jets by stopping them on a key goal line stand.

The 14-4 Steelers dominated the game in the first half going up 24-3 with Rashard Mendenhall rushing for 95 of his 121 yards in the first two quarters.

Pittsburgh is in its eighth Super Bowl and has won the most titles with 6.

The Jets trying to get the Super Bowl since the days of Broadway Joe Namath 42 years ago, got off on a bad start against a team who is hard to comeback against.

The New York Jets finished the season at 13-6 and failed for the fourth time in the AFC title game to advance to the Super Bowl.

The Steelers counted out by everybody when Ben Roethlisberger was suspended by the NFL for the first four games, did not wither and still won their division and the AFC Championship.
