The Cincinnati Bengals have had to do some shuffling of coaches on the defensive side of the ball after assistant coach Kevin Coyle left to go to Miami to be the defensive coordinator of the Dolphins.

The team has hired former New York Jets assistant coach Mark Carrier as their new defensive backs coach, filling Coyle’s vacancy.

Carrier was an NFL safety for 11 years with the Bears, Lions & Redskins. He  spent the past six years as an assistant coach with the Ravens as defensive backs coach for four and two years as the defensive line coach of the Jets.

The Bengals also gave a promotion to Paul Guenther to linebackers coach replacing Jeff FitzGerald.

Guenther has been with Cincinnati in various coaching roles for the past eight years. Last year, he spent time with the special teams and defensive backs.

Mike Zimmer is still the defensive coordinator.

The Tennessee Volunteers have turned their basketball program over to 39-year-old Cuonzo Martin of Missouri State.

Martin takes the job knowing that the Volunteers program will be facing possible punishment by the NCAA for recruiting violations.

Martin replaces, the popular but mistake-prone Bruce Pearl, who was fired on March 21, just one month after being charged with unethical conduct for lying to NCAA investigators.

Martin has been one of the young, up-and coming coaches, spent eight years as an assistant at Purdue University. In 2008, Missouri State hired him and he compiled a 61-41 record in three seasons. He was selected as the Missouri Valley Conference coach of the year this season after the Bears finished 26-9 and won the program’s first MVC regular-season championship.

One of the top players to ever play at Purdue under Gene Keady, Martin scored 1,666 points in 127 career games from 1991-1995.
