NASCAR ‘THE CHASE RACE” PREVIEW: Charlotte Motor Speedway on ABC-TV Saturday night

The Chase for the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup continues Saturday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Bank of America 500 at 7:30 p.m. on ABC-TV.

The defending champion is Jamie McMurray from 2010.

The top 5 Chase leaders are 1) Carl Edwards; 2) Kevin Harvick -1; 3) Jimmie Johnson -4; 4) Brad Keselowski -11 and 5) Matt Kenseth.

Tony Stewart took the pole at Charlotte Motor Speedway, outracing Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards on Thursday night.

This is Stewart’s first pole in more than a year since Pocono in August of 2010 and is first at Charlotte in 26 tries.

Stewart was clocked driving around the 2.5-mile oval with a speed of 191.959 to lead up front for the race. Kenseth was clocked at 191.918.

Jeff Gordon on the pole for NASCAR race at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Jeff Gordon has captured the pole for Saturday night’s Sprint Cup race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Gordon recovered from a very poor practice session of 33rd, to be the lead car.

Gordon, fourth in the championship points standings, had a speed of 191.544 mph Thursday night which was good enough to hold off Carl Edwards, who will start second in the Bank of America 500 in Concord, North Carolina.

Jimmie Johnson, the points leader who’s out to win his fifth straight Sprint Cup title, will start 10th.
