Dayton Dragons first baseman Donald Lutz has been selected as the Midwest League Batter of the Week for the final week of the 2011 season.

For the week, Lutz hit .448 with three homers in seven games.

Lutz finished the season batting .301 with 20 home runs and 75 runs batted in. He became the second player in Dragons history to hit .300 or higher with at least 20 home runs, joining Austin Kearns from the 2000 Dragons.

Lutz contributed to a Dayton offensive attack that led the league and set a club record in team batting average at .264.

The Dragons became just the second Midwest League team in the last 42 years to lead the league in most runs scored and fewest runs allowed. They were the only minor league team in all of Minor League Baseball to earn this accomplishment in 2011.

The Dragons also made the Midwest League playoff.

Indians welcome Choo back from DL; designate Kearns for assignment

The Cleveland Indians are glad to have their star right fielder, Shin-Soo Choo back on the field. But they also hope he can improve his batting average, while helping their offensive output.

This year he has struggled hitting .244 with five homers and 28 RBI’s in 72 games.

The Indians activated Choo on Friday from the 15-day disabled list, He is returning from having a displaced fracture of his left thumb.

Choo has been out of action since June 24 at San Francisco when Giants lefty Jonathan Sanchez hit his left thumb with a pitch.

It was originally announced that he would miss eight to 10 weeks with the injury. But it has been slightly more than six weeks since the surgical procedure.

To add Choo to the roster, Cleveland had to designate veteran outfielder Austin Kearns for assignment. This means that the Indians have 10 days to either trade or release Kearns, or re-assign him to the Minors if he clears waivers. Kearns can also decline any assignment and become a free agent. He is hitting .200 with two homers and seven RBI’s.

Austin Kearns returns (file photo)

Eventhough the Indians traded him to the New York Yankees during the 2010 trading period, Austin Kearns told the Indians he wanted to come back.

Kearns, who spent four months with Cleveland last season before he was traded to the Yankees, returned to the club by agreeing to a $1.3 million, one-year contract. Kearns made Cleveland’s roster out of training camp and was with the Indians until July 30, when he was traded away for Zach McAllister.

Kearns, who has also played for Cincinnati and Washington, batted .272 with eight homers and 42 RBIs in 84 games for the Indians. With the Yankees, he batted .235 with two homers and seven RBIs in 36 games.

Current Cleveland Indians manager Manny Acta likes Kearns as a player who also played for him in Washington.

The Indians will have to make room on the 40-man roster for Kearns. General manager Chris Antonelli said that someone will be designated for assignment.
