K.J. Choi leads PGA Tour’s Verizon Heritage tournament

compiled from staff, wire and PGA Tour reports

K.J. Choi has kept up his strong play from the Masters tournament even when Tiger Woods is not in his group.

Choi played with Woods all four rounds of last week’s Masters and it carried over on Thursday, when he shot a 7-under 64 to take a two-stroke lead at the Verizon Heritage at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Choi tied Woods for fourth at Augusta National, finishing five shots behind champion Phil Mickelson.  This week, most of the big names in golf are taking the week off including Woods and Mickelson.

Choi decided not to take the week off becaus he has been on such a roll of solid golf that includes second and fourth place finishes over his past three tournaments.

Choi used a stretch of three birdies over four holes on the front nine to take the lead, then had a similar run on the back to separate from a crowded pack and finish with his lowest score this season. Choi rolled in a 30-footer for birdie on the 13th to catch Jerry Kelly and Davis Love III. He closed his assault by putting his approach to 2 feet on the 16th for a birdie.

The 40-year-old Choi has said that he enjoyed every Masters tournament moment with Tiger Woods last week and it helped him improve his patience and focus.

Mike Weir and Greg Owen were next at 66, then came a large group at 67 that includes Jim Furyk, Sergio Garcia, and five-time winner Davis Love III.

Usually at this time of the year, the South Korea native is at home in Texas taking a break after the Masters tournament. But in 2010, Choi is having such a good year and his game is so solid, for instance his 69.25 scoring average is second to Anthony Kim, he didn’t want to take a break.

Mickelson wins 2010 Masters; Tiger finishes 4th and will take time off again

compiled from staff and wire reports

“Lefty” as he is called on tour got a long awaited break on Sunday.

Phil Mickelson won his third Masters title, shooting a 5-under-67 to pull away for a three-stroke win over England’s Lee Westwood.

Even better than winning the green jacket for Mickelson was seeing his wife waiting behind the 18th green at Augusta National.

Amy Mickelson had not been at a golf tournament since being dianosed with breast cancer 11 months ago and his golf game was being affected by it. Furthermore, his mother, Mary Mickelson, was diagnosed with breast cancer in July.

Determined to win the Masters for his family, Mickelson made two remarkable par saves from trees, seized control with a 15-foot birdie putt in the heart of Amen Corner and then made a gutsy play with a 6-iron off the pine straw and over Rae’s Creek on the par-5 13th hole to set up a birdie. It was the kind of shot that was brought Mickelson so much criticism for taking unnecessary risks.

His final birdie only mattered on the scorecard, 16-under-272, the lowest by a Masters champion since Tiger Woods in 2001. Mickelson had this won as he walked up the 18th fairway to a massive ovation.

Tiger Woods performed as though his five-month hiatus never happened. He broke par all four rounds, closed with a 69 and tied for fourth with South Korea’s K.J. Choi, five shots behind. Tiger told CBS Sports analyst Peter Kostis after the match that he’ll take some more time off to evaluate his game and situation.

For Lee Westwood, this was his best chance at winning a major, but he failed to make putts to stay in contention.

Anthony Kim closed with a 65, the best score of the tournament, and finished alone in third.

Mickelson became the eighth player with at least three Masters titles, and it was the fourth major of his career, breaking out of a pack that had included South Africa’s Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington of Ireland and Fiji’s Vijay Singh from his generation.

Thrilling third round at Augusta leads to the finale. Who will win?

compiled by staff and wire reports

Lee Westwood held a one-stroke lead at the Majors, his best chance yet to win his first major championship. Nipping at his heels is Phil Mickelson, who electrified Augusta National in the third round when he made back-to-back eagles on his way to a 67.

Tiger Woods was still in the mix as well, four shots back and tied with K.J. Choi for third place. Those two were playing in the next-to-last group, the fourth straight day they’ve been paired together.

Fred Couples was five behind and hoping to become the oldest major champion at age 50.

On Saturday, Mickelson made consecutive eagles with three shots. Couples chipped in for eagle. Woods made three straight birdies to keep his name high on the leaderboard. Ricky Barnes chipped in for a birdie and rolled in another with a 60-foot putt.

Westwood, number 4 in the world and among the best without a major, was at 12-under 204.  His final-round playing partner was Mickelson, number 3 in the world and the sentimental favorite at Augusta given his disturbing year at home with his wife and mother battling breast cancer.

No problem with his golf game, Tiger is in the hunt at Masters

Coming back from a five-month layoff, his marriage and reputation in a shambles from multiple affairs and infidelity, Tiger Woods, the world’s number-one golfer took to the course at Augusta National and basically showed why he is the world’s greatest golfer by having  the best ever opening round at the Masters on Thursday.

Tiger Woods’ opening round success put him two-shots behind another surprise on Thursday, first-round Fred Couples.

During a press conference early in the week, Tiger promised to have better respect for the game by controlling his emotions, but there was very little difference as he slammed his driver, pumped fists and sunk to his knees.

Fred Couples, the same 50-year-old who is having a sensational year on the Champions Tour, played a practice round with Woods on Monday, said he is not surprised that Tiger is amongst the leaders.

Couples shot a 66, which is his best score ever at the Masters and made him the oldest player to be the outright leader after the opening round.

60-year-old Tom Watson, the oldest player in the Masters, had a bogey-free round of 67. that left him tied for third with Lee Westwood, Phil Mickelson, Y.E. Yang and K.J. Choi.

Couples and Watson were the biggest surprises, of course, but Mickelson came to the Masters without having finished in the top five all year. He looked very comfortable and relaxed, especially on the back nine with an eagle-birdie-birdie stretch that briefly put him atop the leaderboard at 67.

Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer were the honorary starters, with the two longtime rivals hitting ceremonial tee shots.

In his first public appearances on Sunday and Monday at Augusta National Golf Club, Tiger Woods had a chance to play the course as a tuneup for this weeks Masters Tournament which begins on Thursday.

On Sunday, the course was closed to the public and reporters were only able to watch Woods work on the driving range, two putting greens and then tee off from the 10th hole. He was followed by 15 security personnel, including several officers from the Sheriff’s Department of Richmond County.

Tiger Woods (PGA)

On Monday, he practiced again and was greeted by fans very warmly and was actually surprised by the greeting from the crowds.

Tiger hasn’t played in a tournament since the Australian Masters last November. The fans of the PGA Tour have an interest in his game as he returns to pursue his 5th championship and green jacket at Augusta.

It has been reported throughout the media that Tiger wasn’t wearing a wedding ring when he put on his golf glove. His golf bag featured just the Tiger Woods golf logo.

Tiger Woods, who is unbelievably 34-years-old now, is trying to return from a scandal of lies, mistresses, two stints in rehabilitation clinics and infidelity that came to light that early November morning when he had the car accident with all of the speculation surrounding a golf club swinging from his wife Elin.

After his practice round, Tiger met with the media to answer  questions about everything in his life dating back when the affairs started to how his knee is doing. Below is part 1 of 10 questions from the press conference at Augusta National.
