* In 1471, King Henry VI of England died in the Tower of London at age 49.

* In 1542, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto died while searching for gold along the Mississippi River.

* In 1881, Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross.

* In 2002, The State Department named seven

nations as sponsors of terror, with Iran at the top of the list. The other countries were Cuba, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan and Syria.

* In 1985, a U.S.-French expedition found the wreckage of the Titantic on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean about 400 miles off of Newfoundland.

* In 1995, a ribbon-cutting ceremony took place for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.

* In 1969, Apollo 11 blasted off from Cape Kennedy on the first manned mission to the surface of the moon.

* In 1970, Three Rivers Stadium, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Pittsburgh Steelers, officially opened as the Pirates lost to the Cincinnati Reds, 3-2. The stadium was demolished in 2001 as both teams now have new stadiums; the Pirates play in PNC Park and the Steelers in Heinz Field.

* In 1999, John F. Kennedy, Jr., his wife, Carolyn, and her sister, Lauren Bessette, died when their single-engine plane, piloted by Kennedy, plunged into the Atlantic Ocean near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.
