Luke Fabrizius and Juwan Staten led the Dayton Flyers to a blowout win at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, 78-50.

Staten had 10 points, seven assists and two steals to helped the ninth-seeded Flyers over the #8 Minuteman in the first round of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championship.

Fabrizius came off the bench to lead the scoring with 13 points. Chris Wright added 10 points and seven rebounds as Dayton snapped a three-game losing streak. Wright also extended his blocked shot consecutive games streak to 21.

Dayton shot the ball incredibly well early in the game from beyond the arc, hitting nine of its first 15 shots. That helped UD grab a 27-point lead midway through the second half.

The Flyers led 37-16 at the half, the team’s largest halftime advantage of the season. Brandon Spearman and Fabrizius each scored nine for the Flyers, while Staten had eight.

The Flyers defense held UMass to 28 percent shooting from the field and 6-of-30 from the 3-point line.

Dayton on offense went 13-of-23 from 3-point range and finished the game shooting 53 percent from the floor.

The Flyers will now face arch-rival and #1 seeded Xavier Musketeers in the Atlantic 10 Conference Quarterfinals on Friday, March 11. Tip-off is at 12 noon ET in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
