Phillies finally get Howard back from DL to help offense

Ryan Howard (file photo)

The Philadelphia Phillies have activated slugging first baseman Ryan Howard from the disabled list and he is expected to make his season debut tonight, Friday, July 6 against Atlanta.  Hector Luna was sent down to Triple-A Lehigh Valley to make room for Howard.

The always-smiling Howard has been out of action the entire 2012 season after rupturing his left Achilles tendon while making the final out in the Phillies loss to St. Louis in Game 5 of the NL division series this past October.

Howard played in seven rehab games in the minor leagues, going 10-for-20 with a home run.

Bad luck has seemed to follow Paris in her quest for a pro career.

Paris was the No. 7 overall pick of Sacramento in 2009 but the team folded at the end of the season. The 6-foot-4 daughter of former NFL player, Bubba Paris, was selected in the dispersal draft by Chicago but did not earn a roster spot. In 2011, she signed with the Los Angeles Sparks and was waived three months later. She landed with Atlanta in June 2011 and was waived a few weeks ago.

27-year-old former Columbus Clippers outfielder Melky Cabrera has been around the majors leagues in just a short time.

He has played for the Yankees, Atlanta and the Royals.

Now he is a member of the San Francisco Giants.

Cabrera is one of the hottest hitters in Major League Baseball.

Cabrera’s 51 hits in May equaled a Giants record for most hits in a month since the team moved to San Francisco from New York in 1958.

His 51 hits is better any of the well-known Giants hitters of the past, Willie Mays and Orlando Cepeda.

Cabrera hit .429 in May, with three homers, five triples, seven doubles and 17 runs batted in.

He hit safely in 25 of 29 games.
