Baylor’s Griner, Mulkey pick up AP Awards

Brittney Griner

Kim Mulkey

Baylor University Bears center Brittney Griner, who averaged 23.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 5.2 blocked shots per game this season, was named the Associated Press women’s basketball Player of the Year.

Just a junior, the Houston native is 6’8, 208-pounds, wears a men’s size 17 or 18 shoe and has a arm span of 86″.

Griner is the first Baylor player to win the award. She received 36 votes Saturday from the 40-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25.

Griner’s win ended a run of three straight seasons that a Connecticut player has been player of the year, Maya Moore won the award last season.

Lady Bears head coach Kim Mulkey was selected the AP Coach of the Year.

Mulkey has guided her team to an undefeated season, and Baylor needs one more win to become the first team in NCAA history to win 40 games in a season. They’ll play Notre Dame in the women’s championship game on Tuesday night in Denver.

The Buckeyes and Cornhuskers will be doing battle in Lincoln, Nebraska tonight.

The two programs are among only eight in the country with 800 or more wins. Nebraska is fourth with 841 and the Buckeyes have been victorious 834 times.

Nebraska is 4-1, 0-1 in the Big Ten and ranked #14 and 15 in the latest Associated Press and USA Today polls.

The Cornhuskers lost their first game of the season last Saturday night at #7 Wisconsin, 48-17.

The Huskers started the season with wins over Chattanooga (40-7), Fresno State (42-29), Washington (51-38) and at Wyoming (38-14).

As a team Nebraska leads the nation in kickoff returns at 30.5 yards a return and ranks ninth in rushing, racking up just under 250 yards per game.

Ameer Abdullah is the nation’s best return man at 35.1 yards per kick return and the 18th with 12.0 yards per punt return.

Running back Rex Burkhead and quarterback Taylor Martinez rank second and fourth in rushing in the Big Ten with 103.2 and 96.4 yards per game, respectively.

Bo Pelini, a graduate of Ohio State in 1990, is in his fourth season at Nebraska as the head coach with a 34-13 overall record. He has led the Cornhuskers to three straight bowl games: Gator (2008) and Holiday Bowls (2009, 2010).

Pelini was a four-year letterwinner as a defensive back for the Buckeyes under Earle Bruce and John Cooper from 1987 to 1990.

Pelini started in the OSU secondary his final two seasons, was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and was a co-captain as a senior. Pelini received the “Bo Rein Award” as a senior, given to the teams’ most inspirational player. Pelini graduated with a degree in business administration in 1990.

Tonight’s game will mark the third time Pelini has coached against his alma mater. In 1991, the Youngstown, Ohio native was a graduate assistant for an Iowa team that beat OSU, 16-9, in Columbus. After taking the Nebraska head job in December of 2007, Pelini completed his role as defensive coordinator at LSU, helping to guide the Tigers to a 38-24 win over OSU in the BCS National Championship Game in New Orleans.

GAME NOTES:

* Nebraska and Ohio State are meeting for just the third time and the first time in Lincoln. The Buckeyes own a 2-0 edge with a pair of wins in Columbus. Sixth-ranked Ohio State beat Nebraska, 28-20, in 1955 and the #8 Buckeyes beat Nebraska, 34-7, in 1956. The Cornhuskers has played every other Big Ten school more recently than Ohio State.

* Saturday’s game will be the fifth game in Nebraska history involving two teams with 800 all-time wins. Nebraska’s previous games between 800-win teams were three against Texas (2007, 2009, and 2010) and a 2010 game against Oklahoma.

Nebraska has two upcoming games this season against 800-win teams, November 12 at Penn State and November 19 at Michigan. Nebraska reached 800 wins during the 2006 season and has 841 wins all-time.
