Scottish race car driver Dario Franchitti, widely-known as the husband of actress Ashley Judd, is showing that he’ll be a force in the 2011 IndyCar series.

Franchitti, a two-time defending series champion was dominant in the opening race of the season, leading 94 of 100 laps on the 1.8-mile street course to beat out Will Power by more than seven seconds.

The win was Franchitti’s first and fifth top-five finish in six starts in the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Florida.

Franchitti took control early in the race and was never really challenged at all.

Tony Kanaan, who joined his new racing team on Monday, held off Simona de Silvestro in the final laps for third place.

De Silvestro finished fourth, her best finish in 16 career starts.

Danica Patrick, in her seventh IndyCar season finished a disappointing 12th. She was penalized one spot on the final lap for making “avoidable contact” with JR Hildebrand.

New Albany, Ohio native Graham Rahal finished 17th driving for Ganassi Racing.

New Albany’s Rahal will drive for Target Chip Ganassi Racing

Graham Rahal was introduced this week as one of two new drivers for Target Chip Ganassi Racing. 25-year-old Charlie Kimball was the other driver added to a team that also has 37-year-old Dario Franchitti and 30-year-old Scott Dixon. Rahal will drive the #38 car.

Rahal from New Albany, Ohio, is thrilled to have a full season contract because in 2010, he drove for four teams after losing his ride after three seasons with Newman-Haas Racing when sponsorship couldn’t be found. The talk around motorsport circles was that Paul Newman, the actor was the drawing card for sponsorship and when he passed away, the dollars suddenly dried up.

Despite sponsorship troubles in 2010, Rahal garnered seven top-10 finishes in 12 starts.

Rahal’s sponsorship for 2011 will be TBC Retail group, which is the owner of National Tire and Battery.

The 21-year-old Rahal, is the son of 1986 Indy 500 winner Bobby Rahal. Graham became the youngest pole-winner and race winner in series history in 2008 when he was driving for the McDonald’s sponsored car of Newman/Haas/Lanigan. In 2009, he finished seventh in the points standings with the same team.

By adding Kimball and Rahal, Target Ganassi will field the biggest and probably the best IndyCar team next season.

Franchitti, the husband of actress Ashley Judd, has won two Indy 500′s since 2007 and three of the last four IRL points titles, including the past two with Target Ganassi.

Dixon, won the Indianapolis 500 in 2008 and owns two points titles.

Ganassi is coming off his best season in 2010 as a team owner and arguably the best season of any American team owner has had, period! He won NASCAR’s Daytona 500 and the Indy 500, the first owner to ever achieve that distinctive double and then Franchitti rallied to win the IndyCar points title.

Dario Franchitti wins IRL Chicagoland race on good pit strategy

Actress Ashley Judd’s husband, Dario Franchitti’s pit strategy paid off, in helping him win the IndyCar series race at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois Saturday night.

There was a caution with 31 laps to go, which allowed all leaders to make a final pit stop.

Franchitti’s crew gambled by not changing any tires during the final pit stop, gaining eight spots in the pits and sending him out in the race lead.

It was a very rough night for IRL series points leader Will Power, who was running amongst the leaders when he abruptly went to pit road for an extra fuel stop with five laps left in the race. He ended up finishing a disappointing 16th. Franchitti was trailing Power at the start of the race by 59 points in the standings.

Rounding out the top five, Dan Wheldon came in second, followed by Marco Andretti, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Tony Kanaan.

Dario started from the third position. This is the 11th time that the winning car has started from that position. Franchitti’s other win in 2007, also came from the third starting position.

The last driver to earn his second Indy 500 win with a different team than his first was Arie Luyendyk. He won in 1990 for Shierson Racing and earned his second victory in 1997 for Treadway Racing.
