Coming out of Spring Football, the Ohio State running back position was stocked. Even with Daniel “Boom” Herron serving a 5-game suspension for NCAA rules violations to start the 2011 season, there was still Jordan Hall, Jaamal Berry, Rod Smith and Carlos Hyde.

The last week, it was discovered that projected starter Hall was suspended for the Akron game for accepting cash from a charity event and Berry was being kept out due to a pulled hamstring.

Still, Hyde’s name was not heavily mentioned, but the OSU coaches didn’t have much choice with he and Smith being the only running backs available.

The 6’0, 238-pound Hyde from Naples, Florida answered all of the critics and skeptics with 19 rushes for 93 yards and a long run of 24 yards.

GAME NOTES:

* 33 in a row, Ohio State’s home-opener winning streak, going back to a 19-0 loss to Penn State in 1978 with Art Schlichter at quarterback.

* Akron is 1-7 against Ohio State. The Zips’ only win was in 1894 at the Ohio State Fair. The Buckeyes are only the Big Ten team the Zips have beaten. Akron is 1-22 against ranked opponents since joining the Football Bowl Subdivision in 1987.
