2010 POINSETTIA BOWL: San Diego State too much for Navy to handle

The San Diego State Aztecs led by freshman Ronnie Hillman scoring four touchdowns and tied for a career best 228 yards rushing on 28 carries to its first bowl win since 1969, 35-14 over Navy in Poinsettia Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

The game was played on a slick field after 1.5 million gallons of rainwater was pumped out of the stadium the night before the game. There had been several days of torrential rains which flooded the field and portions of the parking lot.

Hillman, the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, scored on runs of 22,37 and 2 yards, and also had a 15-yard scoring pass from Ryan Lindley.

Hillman broke the Poinsettia Bowl record of 129 yards rushing by Navy’s Adam Ballard in 2005.

Hillman also ran for 228 yards in a loss at Missouri on Sept 18.

Navy, who drops to 8-4 on the season, was making its third Poinsettia Bowl appearance since the game’s birth in 2005.

San Diego State goes to 9-4 on the season.


* Made its first postseason trip since the Mountain West Conference formed in 1999.

* The Aztecs played the game at their home stadium, Qualcomm Stadium.

* The Aztecs beat Air Force in San Diego, 27-23. The Falcons were ranked number 23 and that game ended San Diego State’s streak of 25 consecutive losses to ranked teams.

* San Diego State has two of the best running backs in the country in Ronnie Hillman and Brandon Sullivan, who can also play fullback. Hillman leads the Mountain West Conference in rushing yards with 1,304 yards, scoring 14 touchdowns and averaging 5.6 yards a carry. Sullivan, scored nine touchdowns in the aztecs’ final five regular season games.

* QB Ryan Lindley, the three-year starter entered the bowl game with 9,261 career passing yards and 65 passes touchdown. He threw for 528 yards vs. Utah on November 20.

* San Diego State has two NFL-caliber receivers in Vincent Brown and DeMarco Simpson, capable of the home run ball at anytime. Brown has 61 catches for 1,187 yards and nine touchdowns. Simpson has 65 receptions for 1,175 yards and eight touchdowns.


* Navy has appeared in eight straight bowl games.

* The Midshipmen have a nice duo at fullback in Alexander Teich and Vince Murray.

* QB Ricky Dobbs, a senior has 13 100-yard rushing games in his career, second to Chris McCoy’s 15 on Navy’s all-time list. He has more than 2,000 career rushing yards.

* LB Tyler Simmons is the team leader in tackles having consecutive 17-tackle games against Central Michigan and Arkansas State.

* FB Alexander Teich, a junior had the best game of his career against Notre Dame, 26 rushes for 210 yards and a 31-yard touchdown reception.

Field for 2010 NIT Season Tip-Off is set


Villanova, Tennessee, UCLA and Wake Forest will be the regional hosts for the 2010 NIT Season Tip-Off tournament.

The first-round pairings for the 16-team tournament were announced earlier this week.


The first-and-second round games will be played November 15-17 with the winners advancing to Madison Square Garden for the semifinals on November 24. The championship game will be played November 26.

Consolation games will be played November 22-23 at sites to be determined later.

The East Regional has Hampton at Wake Forest and Virginia Commonwealth against Winthrop. UCLA will host Pepperdine in the West Regional and Nevada plays Pacific.

The North Regional will have Villanova hosting Marist and George Washington against Boston University. The South Regional has Belmont at Tennessee while Missouri State faces Arkansas State.

Duke University beat Connecticut to win last year’s Tip-Off Classic.
