Ohio State Football 2013 Fall Camp: Taylor Decker looking to make an impact on offensive line

The Ohio State Buckeyes are gearing up for the 2013 season with high expectations.

Their offensive line, eventhough they lost Reid Fragel to the NFL, is as sturdy as it has been in awhile with four starters returning and sophomore Taylor Decker looking to make an impact at right tackle.

At 6’7, 315-pounds, Decker is hulking and very powerful. The Vandalia-Butler High School grad played in all 12 games last season for Ohio State.

Taylor is seeking to replace the beforementioned Fragel, an NFL Draft pick in the 7th round by the Cincinnati Bengals.

The other members of the offensive line include senior Jack Mewhort at left tackle, senior Andrew Norwell at left guard, senior Corey Linsley at center and Sr. Marcus Hall at right guard.

Going into the 2012 season, the Buckeyes offensive line was considered its weakest line as the line underachieved under former line coach Jim Bollman. But the unit came together under the tutelage of Ed Warriner and finished the season as the best in the Big Ten.

SPORTS SPOTLIGHT: Ohio State Spring Football wrapup with Mike Brewster, offensive lineman

The Ohio State Buckeyes Spring Football Season has come and gone and the offense can brag that it beat the defense, 59-27 before 44,276 in Ohio State last Saturday.

The battle for the starting quarterback position due to Terrelle Pryor’s five-game suspension to start the season, seems to be in the hands of Braxton Miller who outplayed everybody who was competing against him.

Miller had four possessions of the football and led the offense on scoring drives three of the four times. He directed a 92-yard touchdown drive, threw a 15-yard TD pass to end another and avoided sacks, turnovers and made plays just like the elusive Pryor.

Any questions about him, was answered in the game and he seems ready to play right away.

There are still questions about other positions on the team, especially the offensive line. Plenty of questions going into fall camp. Mike Adams will be serving a five-game suspension, plus two starters and two key backups are gone. This group lacks numbers especially this spring. There are four freshman coming in the fall, but there will only be six players with experience when the opening game gets underway. One of the new players will have to occupy the left tackle position, the quarterback’s blind spot.

Center Michael Brewster is back to anchor the line as a four-year starter. Two new players who have emerged this spring are guards Jack Mewhort and Corey Linsley.

Copeting at the all-important left tackle spot is Andrew Norwell and Marcus Hall who are experienced and played very solid this spring.
