Charleston upsets Dayton in NIT first round game

Southern Conference player of the year, senior guard Andrew Goudelock scored a career-high 39 points, including eight three-pointers, as College of Charleston beat defending NIT champion Dayton in a first round game in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Flyers would’ve had the home game as the #3 seed, but UD Arena was being used for the NCAA Tournament.

Chris Wright scored 21 points for Dayton in the final game of his stellar career.

The Dayton (22-14) senior class leaves the university as the all-time winningest in the program’s history with 97 wins.

The Flyers shot 43 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Cougars 43-34. But Charleston connected on 30-of-38 free throws and hit 12 3-point baskets.

Dayton was playing its fifth game in 8 days.

Charleston, now 25-10 will play Cleveland State in the next round.

Dayton Flyers begin NIT Title defense at College of Charleston

The defending National Invitation Tournament Champion Dayton Flyers will be able to defend their title as one of 32 teams selected to the 2011 NIT.

UD earned the #3 seed and will begin on the road to take on #6 seed College of Charleston tonight (Tuesday, March 15) beginning at 7 p.m. ET.

The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.

Dayton enters the 2011 NIT as the #3 seed in its region, but goes on the road to Charleston, South Carolina due to UD Arena hosting the NCAA First Four. During last year’s NIT Championship run, the Flyers won at Cincinnati, at Illinois and in Madison Square garden against Ole Miss and North Carolina.

The College of Charleston, 24-10 overall, won the Southern Conference regular season championship. The Cougars led by 2011 SoCon Player of the Year, Andrew Goudelock.

The Southern Conference is Appalachian State, UT-Chattanooga, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, Samford, North Carolina-Greensboro, Western Carolina and Wofford.

UD is attempting to be the third team to win the NIT Championship in back-to-back seasons.

The Flyers’ NIT history is rich with success. Last season was Dayton’s third NIT title. UD previously won the NIT in 1962 and 1968. Last year was also UD’s 22nd appearance in the postseason NIT.

The Dayton, Ohio school has been the runner-up five times and showcases a 40-20 all-time record. Head Coach Brian Gregory is 7-1 all-time in the NIT. Dayton’s 22 NIT appearances are second only to St. John’s 27 berths.

The Flyers reached the finals five times in the 1950′s and won the tournament in 1962 under coach Tom Blackburn and 1968 under coach Don Donoher.
