Eight players scored in double figures for the Cleveland Cavaliers as they glided to a 111-95 win over the Philadelphia 76ers Tuesday night in Cincinnati’s U.S. Bank Arena.

J.J. Hickson led the balanced attack with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Anderson Varejao, in his first action of the preseason scored 11 points, grabbed 11 rebounds in 27 minutes of action.

Andre Iguodala led the Sixers with 19 points, but the crowd of 6,217 came to see former Ohio State star Evan Turner. The 76ers first round draft pick in June, scored four points.

U.S. advances into world championships behind Durant’s 38 points

Kevin Durant said that he wanted September 11 to be a special day back in the United States since he and his basketball teammates are in Istanbul, Turkey.

Wearing a special memorial message on his basketball shoes, Durant led the United States into the gold-medal game at the world basketball championships, scoring a U.S.-record, 38 points Saturday in an 89-74 win over Lithuania.

Durant scored inside and outside as he scored 17 points in the first quarter to help the Americans to a lead that they never would give up.

By scoring 38 points, Durant passed Carmelo Anthony’s single-game record of 35 points and put his tournament average at 22 ppg which is by far the best of any United States player.

Durant will lead the U.S. to its first chance at a world title since 1994. They’ll play Turkey, which beat Serbia 83-82 in the other final four matchup.

Lamar Odom and Andre Iguodala led a tough defensive effort that shutdown Lina Kleiza, the Lithuania star. He was never a factor.

U.S. national basketball team is set; Rondo withdraws suddenly

Head coach Mike Krzyzewski has selected his final 12-man roster for the world championships. They play a final tuneup against Greece on Wednesday before the real games start in Turkey on Saturday.

But the squad will have to play without Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo who asked to withdraw from consideration.

Rajon Rondo (NBA)

Rondo had started the United States first two exhibition games, then to the surprise of all, including team members, he didn’t play at all Sunday when the Americans edged Spain in another game.

The final roster includes: Andre Iguodala, Kevin Durant, Tyson Chandler, Derrick Rose, Kevin Love, Rudy Gay, Stephen Curry, Lamar Odom, Eric Gordon, Chauncey Billups, Russell Westbrook and Danny Granger.

Philadelphia 76ers coaching carousel continues; Jordan out after 1 season

compiled from staff and wire reports

The once-proud franchise of the Philadelphia 76ers that has Julius Erving, Maurice Cheeks, Billy Cunningham, Hal Greer, Allen Iverson, Charles Barkley, Wilt Chamberlain in its history, has now become the joke of the league because of its coaching carousel.

For example, current star player, Samuel Dalembert has seen it all in 10 years in Philly. His next coach will be his eighth.

Eddie Jordan (nba)

Eddie Jordan is the latest coach fired by an organization that can’t find the right mix of players and coaches to contend regularly for championships. Jordan who uses the much-maligned Princeton offense was given only one season to maike it work.

Since Larry Brown left in 2003, four other head coaches have failed to coach more than 82 games for the organization. Jordan’s dismissal means a second straight offseason of a coaching search.

With Jordan being ousted, all the heat and blame shifts to team president and general manager Ed Stefanski, who has yet to make a big move with a big payroll. The $80 million dollar contract he gave to free-agent Elton Brand in 2008 was a mistake and the $80 million to keep Andre Iguodala has not paid dividends in the standings. Jordan’s hire was disliked by fans and media from day one last May.

Jordan’s dismissal had been widely speculated for months as the players never warmed up to the Princeton offense.

Lou Williams, Thaddeus Young and Marreese Speights were among the promising core of young players who did not progress this season as the organization had expected. Brand hasn’t lived or played up to his contract, Dalembert was his usual erratic and inconsistent self and Iguodala continued to show he is not a franchise player.

James returns to lead Cleveland past Philadelphia despite sloppy play

Mo Williams Cavaliers point guard (Yahoo)

The Cleveland Cavaliers are the NBA’s best team but on Friday night, a fan not familiar with pro basketball might have thought otherwise. The Cavs played sloppy, shot only 10 of 31 from 3-point land and allowed 66 points in the paint.

But the difference in the Cavs and the 76ers is that Cleveland can win a game even if they play at 50% of their talent level. Thus the Cavaliers won 100-95.

LeBron James returned to score 23 points, grab 6 rebounds, dish out 10 assists and 3 blocks. Mo Williams had 21 points, 16 coming in the 2nd half and Delonte West with 17 points off the bench. West also came up with the game-clinching defensive play by intercepting a pass from Philadelphia rookie Jrue Holiday.

The 76ers are one of the worst jump shooting teams in the league, going 9 of 38 from the outside. But they found that going inside against Cavaliers was their best option. Cleveland playing without Shaquille O’Neal and Antawn Jamison, had problems with their interior defense. Philadelphia received 30 points from Andre Iguodala and 24 from Elton Brand and that kept them in the game.

However, down the stretch, the Cavs were able to switch Jamario Moon and LeBron James on Iguodala and Brand and they were a combined 2-10.
