LPGA planning new world tournament to determine best in world

The sport of golf will be returning to the Olympics in 2016 and the LPGA Tour will be creating a tournament to determine the best in the world.

The International Crown will start in 2014 and will be played every other year. It’ll have four days of team play that matches eight countries that can field the strongest four-player teams based on the world rankings.

The inagural tournament will be held in late July at Caves Valley Golf Club in the Baltimore, Maryland area.

The International Crown will be geared towards the Olympics, but it will be similar to the Solheim Cup, which doesn’t necessarily have the world’s best golfers due to the fact it is for Americans and Europeans.

The International Crown will have almost the same flaw.

Based on the current world rankings, there are three players among the top 15 who would not be eligible if the event were held this year: Suzann Pettersen of Norway, Sheshan Feng from China and Catriona Matthew of Scotland.

Dempsey, U.S. men beat Italy in soccer exhibition

The United States men’s soccer team posted a rare win, beating Italy 1-0 in an exhibition game in Genoa, Italy.

The hero was Clint Dempsey who scored in the 55th minute.

The win was the Americans’ first over the Italians in 11 games, covering 78 years. The Americans had been 0-7-3 against Italy and had been outscored 32-4.

The U.S. has struggled in the World Cup. They returned to the tournament for the first time in 40 years in 1990 and advanced to the quarterfinals in 2002.

That penchant of bad luck caused a change in coaching as Bob Bradley was let go by the U.S. Soccer Federation in favor of Jurgen Klinsmann.
