Everyone who follows the Cavaliers, media and fans, all agree that the January 5 trade with the New York Knicks that brought J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert gave the team the needed push and it has resulted in 16 wins in 18 games and the team to a 35-22 record and a definitely threat in the Eastern Conference.

Sunday afternoon, Smith and Shumpert made their first return to the Big Apple and played well in Cleveland’s 101-83 win over the Knicks.

Smith scored 17 points and Shumpert came off the bench for four points, five rebounds and seven assists.

Sunday’s game was really over early as the Cavs built up a 36-17 lead in the first quarter and a 62-38 advantage at the half. From there, it was just a matter of what the final score would be.

Cleveland’s big three pulled their weight as well.

LeBron James and Kyrie Irving each scored 18 points and Kevin Love finished with 16 points while hauling down 16 rebounds. James during the game moved past Allen Iverson and into 22nd place on the NBA career scoring list with 24,383 points.

The Knicks, who have had several losing streaks this season with a 10-45 record, have now lost seven in a row, were led by Langston Galloway with 13 points.

Former NBA All-Star guard Allen Iverson scored 15 points in his debut for Besiktas Cola Turka of Turkey in a 94-91 loss in a European Cup game in Istanbul.

Iverson said he signed to play over in Turkey, because the management of his team said they needed a player of his caliber to be a leader and to draw fans.

Evan Turner continues OSU to NBA pipeline; goes number 2 overall to 76ers

compiled from staff and wire reports

Evan Turner’s dream of being an NBA player was completed on Thursday night as he was taken second overall in the 2010 draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Turner had plenty of company at Madison Square Garden as his mother was on hand along with brothers Richard James and Darius Turner, girlfriend Samantha Prahalis of the Ohio State women’s basketball team and agent David Falk. There were also reports that David Lighty and Michael Conley was present in the arena.

The 76ers envision Turner as playing the shooting guard eventually but for now, he’ll have a chance to play point guard, a position that they’ve had trouble replacing since the popular but controversial Allen Iverson was traded to Denver three years ago.

Evan Turner was told that Philly fans can be demanding and he said he has demands on himself and that he’ll play hard  and that the fans won’t have a problem with his game.

Philadelphia 76ers coaching carousel continues; Jordan out after 1 season

compiled from staff and wire reports

The once-proud franchise of the Philadelphia 76ers that has Julius Erving, Maurice Cheeks, Billy Cunningham, Hal Greer, Allen Iverson, Charles Barkley, Wilt Chamberlain in its history, has now become the joke of the league because of its coaching carousel.

For example, current star player, Samuel Dalembert has seen it all in 10 years in Philly. His next coach will be his eighth.

Eddie Jordan (nba)

Eddie Jordan is the latest coach fired by an organization that can’t find the right mix of players and coaches to contend regularly for championships. Jordan who uses the much-maligned Princeton offense was given only one season to maike it work.

Since Larry Brown left in 2003, four other head coaches have failed to coach more than 82 games for the organization. Jordan’s dismissal means a second straight offseason of a coaching search.

With Jordan being ousted, all the heat and blame shifts to team president and general manager Ed Stefanski, who has yet to make a big move with a big payroll. The $80 million dollar contract he gave to free-agent Elton Brand in 2008 was a mistake and the $80 million to keep Andre Iguodala has not paid dividends in the standings. Jordan’s hire was disliked by fans and media from day one last May.

Jordan’s dismissal had been widely speculated for months as the players never warmed up to the Princeton offense.

Lou Williams, Thaddeus Young and Marreese Speights were among the promising core of young players who did not progress this season as the organization had expected. Brand hasn’t lived or played up to his contract, Dalembert was his usual erratic and inconsistent self and Iguodala continued to show he is not a franchise player.
