The Friday night baseball game between Ohio State and Minnesota at Bill Davis Stadium has been suspended until 1:05 p.m. Saturday. The game will pickup with Minnesota batting  and one out in the bottom of the second inning. Approximately 30 minutes following the end of  game 2, the third and final game of the series will begin. Senior Day ceremonies and a salute to retiring baseball coach Bob Todd will precede the start of Game 3.

Coach Todd won his 900th game at Ohio State on Sunday at Iowa 11-6.

The Friday game was suspended at 7:29 p.m. because of lightning in the area. The Buckeyes were leading, 1-0, in the bottom of the second inning.

Alex Wimmers (osu)

A noisy, raucous and boisterous crowd of 1,421 fans showed up at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus, as Ohio State took a half-game lead in the Big Ten Conference race by beating Penn State, 3-1 behind a record-tying pitching performance by All-American ace Alex Wimmers. The Buckeyes moved to 7-3 in the conference and 22-11 overall.

Wimmers, the junior from Cincinnati’s Archbishop Moeller High School, improved to 9-0 this season with a complete-game four-hitter that included 10 strikeouts. With the win, he ties a school record for the best start to a season that has been done only twice in 127 years of baseball at Ohio State. Doug Swearingen started 9-0 for Ohio State in 1982 and Scott Lewis opened 9-0 in 2003.

Wimmers, who is 18-2 the past two seasons, gave up two of the hits in the third inning-a double and a single- and they staked the Nittany Lions to a 1-0 lead. He also gave up a pair of two-out singles in the ninth. Wimmers did walk a season-high five batters, but his 10 strikeouts and scarce number of hits rendered that stat moot. The 10 strikeouts represented the 10th time in his career that he has struck out 10-or-more.

Michael Stephens (osu)

On Saturday afternoon in Bill Davis Stadium, Penn State brought out the lumber to beat Ohio State 18-10, in the middle game of the three-game series to even the series, 1-1.

Michael Stephens went 3-for-4 with 4 runs batted in and scored a run for the Buckeyes.

Elliot Searer finished the day 5-for-6 with a double and Ben Heath went 4-for-6 with two home runs and four runs batted in for the Nittany Lions. David Lutz picked up the win in relief for Penn State, going 4.2 scoreless innings, giving up a pair of hits.

It didn’t take Penn State long to get on the board in the first inning to go up 4-0 off Drew Rucinski and never gave the lead up although the Buckeyes got close at 14-10 later in the game.

Alex Wimmers’ complete game, 14-strikeout performance in the Buckeyes 7-1 win over Indiana Friday earned him his second Big Ten Pitcher of the week honor in 2010.

The pre-season All-American scattered six hits, gave up just one run and did not walk a batter in his longest outing of the year. With the win, Wimmers became the first Buckeye starter to begin the season 7-0 since Cory Luebke did so in 2007. It was the sixth career Big Ten Pitcher of the Week award for the junior right-hander, a 2010 member of the Golden Spikes award watch list given to the best college baseball player in the country.

Ohio State defeated Indiana, 7-1 in a Big Ten Conference game on Friday night in Columbus. Ace All-American Alex Wimmers went the distance and struck out 14 Hoosiers to improve to 7-0 on the season. Ohio State is 18-8 overall and remained tied for first in the Big Ten with a 3-1 record. Indiana’s record is 14-14 overall and the Hoosiers are 1-3 in conference play.

.094 represented the batting average of left-handed hitters this season vs. Wimmers coming in the game. That average was going to get tested vs. Indiana which had four lefty hitters in their lineup, including two of the best hitters in the Big Ten in Alex Dickerson and Jerrud Sabourin. Dickerson came into the game riding a 21-game hitting streak-second longest in the nation- and with 12 home runs and 39 RBI’s to go along with a sky-high .444 batting average. Sabourin was right there in Dickerson’s rare air with a .480 average with 6 homers and 31 RBI’s.

As usual, Wimmers passed the test again. He checked the Hoosier left-handed bats to a 1-15 day at the plate with Sabourin’s ninth-inning single the lone hit allowed.

GAME NOTES

* The Buckeyes Michael Stephens hit his seventh home run of the season.

* Wimmers has made 23 starts and in nine of them, he has struck out 10 or more batters.

* Wimmers lowered his ERA to 1.80.

* Ohio State and Indiana have played every year since 1944.
