After leading the Dayton Flyers to a 10-1 season and the Pioneer Football League championship, head football coach Rick Chamberlin, has been named to the Eddie Robinson Award finalist list.

The award honors the nation’s premier coach and all Football Championship Subdivision conferences are represented among the 20 finalists.

Eddie Robinson was the long-time coach of the Grambling Tigers. He posted a 408-165-15 from 1941-1997. He sent over 200 players to play in the AFL and NFL and they include Buck Buchanan, Willie Brown, Charlie Joiner, James Harris, Willie Davis and Doug Williams who succeeded Robinson as the head coach of one of America’s most-historic black colleges. Coach Robinson died on April 3, 2007 at age 88.

Rick Chamberlin is a former player and 1980 graduate of UD. He has been with the university for 30 years. In each of the three seasons since he was named head coach after the retirement of his mentor, Mike Kelly, the Flyers have won 9 or more games. Coach Chamberlin’s 28 wins, as of this season, make his three year record at Dayton the most successful coaching start in Flyer history.

Coach Chamberlin is in good company for the award; some of the other candidates include: Rob Ash, Montana State; Al Bagnoli, Penn; Reggie Barlow, Alabama State; Kerwin Bell, Jacksonville; K.C. Keeler, Delaware; Jimmye Laycock, William & Mary; Trent Miles, Indiana State; Jerry Moore, Appalachian State and Joe Walton, Robert Morris.

Nearly 175 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and others will select the award recipient. The Robinson Award, in its 24th year, will be presented at the national awards banquet on Thursday, January 6 in Frisco, Texas, the night before the national championship game.
