HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: In overtime, Africentric escapes Briggs, 59-51

The Columbus City League South Division game between Africentric and Briggs went to overtime.

The Nubians of Africentric rallied from a 10-point deficit to send their fans home with a 59-51 win.

Kenny Robinson scored 10 of his 16 points in the overtime period to key the win.

Robinson also was a beast on the boards, pulling down 10 rebounds.

The Briggs Bruins were led by 15 points from the talents of Charles Westbrook.

The Africentric Nubians tuned-up their defense in the second half and dominated overwhelmed Bloom-Carroll, 62-53  for its fourth district title since 2004.

The Nubians (16-7), knocked out the second-seeded  Bulldogs from Fairfield County with a sticky and tough full-court pressure.

Third-seeded Africentric  were able to get Marquice Taylor loose for 34 points against the Bloom-Carroll (16-7) defense.

Steve Bridgeman scored 23 points for the Bulldogs.

The Africentric Nubians led by Ohio State recruit Raven Ferguson reclaimed the Girls City Championship over the weekend.

The seniors on Africentric’s team have played in the City Championship game all four years of their careers.

Matter-of-fact, the Nubians have had a varsity team for eight years, won five City League titles and played in the championship game six times.

The Nubians defeated the Northland Vikings 60-52 with a fourth quarter filled with key plays to seal the win in a game played at Mifflin High School.

Northland had been 18-0 and seeded #2 in the Division I girls tournament coming into the game.

The 18-2 Nubians were the same team that won four straight City League championships before losing to Brookhaven last year.

Ferguson was a force in the game, scoring 22 points, with nine rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals.

In the fourth quarter, the Nubians made 8 of 10 free throws to seal the game.

The Vikings were led by Tatiana Chapple and Symone Denham who scored 15 points each.

The Africentric Nubians beat the Eastmoor Academy women, 60-41 Friday night.

The Nubians swept the season series and clinch a spot in the City League championship game by winning the South Division title.

Ohio State recruit Raven Ferguson led the Nubians with 22 points.

Chelsey Radcliff led the Warriors with 18 points.

Africentric improves its record to 16-2, 13-0.

Eastmoor drops to 13-3, 11-2.

Northland Vikings

The Northland women’s basketball team are showing that they are just as good as the men’s team.

They’re going to the City League championship game for the second time in three years by clinching the North Division with a win at Brookhaven Friday night, 67-48.

Symone Denham scored 28 points and Alexis Peterson knocked in 13 to power the Vikings (17-1, 13-0).

Northland took a 12-point lead at the half.

The Bearcats (13-4, 11-2) have lost to Northland twice this season, their only losses in the North Division.

Travecia Franklin and Jasmine Johnson led Brookhaven in scoring with 14 points each.
