COLUMBUS CITY LEAGUE BASKETBALL: Africentric beats West despite 24 points by Holland

The City South Division leading Africentric Nubians knew they had to stop Ed Golden and Charles Holland when they played Columbus West on Friday night.

Holland was the only factor with 24 points as the Nubians won 87-60 to up its record to 10-1, 7-0 on the season.

The improved West Cowboys, who can score a bunch of points at times, fall to 3-7, 0-6.

Kenny Robinson led a balanced attack of eleven players with 11 points for Africentric.

COLUMBUS CITY LEAGUE: Tucker shot in final seconds gives Africentric key win against Red Devils

The Africentric Nubians are usually clutch late in the game and Friday’s road game at Marion-Franklin was no exception.

Cyquil Tucker scored on a shot in the lane with eight seconds remaining in the game, to lead the Nubians to a 56-55 win over the Red Devils in a City League South Division contest.

The Nubians keep control of first place with the win in South at 5-0, 7-1 overall.

Tucker scored 16 points to pace Africentric.

Tony Anderson led the Red Devils in scoring with 16 points, had a chance to win the game, but his three-point attempt failed as the buzzer sounded.

Marion-Franklin falls to 3-2, 2-2.

The Africentric Nubians have picked up where they left off from last season by winning key games in the Columbus City League South Division.

This week, the Nubians beat Eastmoor Academy, 53-50 Tuesday night on Megasportsnews.com’s HIGH SCHOOL BOUNCE.  Friday night, they breezed by the Independence 76ers, 83-63.

Host Africentric is now 3-1, 2-0 on the young season.

Independence drops to 1-1,1-1.

Kenny Robinson and Akil Cornish each scored 20 points. Cornish was 6 of 7 from beyond the three-point line. Trevon Saunders chipped in with 13 points and 10 assists for the Nubians.

The 76ers were led by Malik Breckenridge with 19 points.

 

COLUMBUS CITY LEAGUE FOOTBALL: Whetstone demolishes Africentric, 84-26

The Africentric Nubians are known for their exploits on the basketball court during the winter months.

But the football team, even with some of the basketball players a part of it, is not as good.

The Nubians were 2-8 last year and they’re 0-2 so far in 2012 after suffering an embarrassing 84-26 home loss on Friday.

Whetstone was the team that handled Africentric.

The Braves led 20-14 at the end of the first quarter and 50-26 at halftime.

Ramroth Finnegan passed for five touchdowns and 423 yards for the Braves.

Africentric’s Trevon Saunders, who is listed by head coach Eugene Barrett as an Athlete, caught six balls for 185 yards and three touchdowns.

Saunders’ teammate, sophomore quarterback Trevon Potts passed for 274 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions.

 

COLUMBUS CITY LEAGUE FOOTBALL: Linden pulls away from Africentric with big third quarter

The Linden McKinley Panthers came into the 2012 football season with some momentum from the previous year.

After losing their first four games, the Panthers won of the six final games and had momentum on their side plus experience.

Head coach Aaron Owens, who doubles as the basketball coach saw good results Friday night.

Linden was trailing 8-6 at the half but took control in the third quarter by exploding for 16 points en route to a 36-14 win over the visiting Africentric Nubians.

The Panthers have some athletes in Chane Cappling, Kijuan Busby and Rashawn Willis.

Cappling rushed for 148 yards, Busby ran for 127 yards and Willis rushed for two scores. All told, the Panthers rushed for 423 yards and four touchdowns against the worn out Africentric defense.
