Neither UConn or Butler lit up the scoreboard, shot the ball well or played a perfect game, but the team that played the best defense, won the game.

The Huskies won 53-41 in Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas, one of the worst national championship game’s of all-time.

Kemba Walker finished with 16 points for the Huskies (32-9), who won their 11th straight game since closing the regular season with a 9-9 Big East record that no one thought they’d even get past the first round of the tournament.

UConn head coach Jim Calhoun at 68-years-old, became the oldest coach to win the national championship and joined the likes of John Wooden, Adolph Rupp, Mike Krzyzewski and Bob Knight as only the fifth coach to win three NCAA titles.

Connecticut using their height and shot-blocking ability, intimidated Butler into missing several inside shots. They outscored the Bulldogs (28-10) 26-2 in the paint. Butler, from the mid-major conference, The Horizon League, were playing in their second straight title game, went a whopping 13 minutes, 26 seconds in the second half making just one field goal. Kind of mind-boggling for a good shooting, perimeter team.

Before their shooting went by the wayside, Butler was leading 25-19 and it became an insurmountable deficit of 41-28.

Duke beat Butler 61-59 for the national championship Monday night, a win that wasn’t locked up until after the buzzer sounded, when Gordon Hayward’s  halfcourt, 3-point heave for the win barely missed to leave most of the 70,000 fans in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis was rooting for Butler, very disappointed for not having pulled off  the upset.

Kyle Singler scored 19 points and Brian Zoubek rebounded Hayward’s miss with 3.6 seconds left.

The Blue Devils, 35-5, who snapped Butler’s 25-game winning streak and gave Duke its long-awaited fourth national title back to Durham, North Carolina.

The “Big Three”, Singler, Jon Scheyer (15 points) and Nolan Smith (13) finally won college basketball’s coveted  trophy for coach Mike Krzyzewski, his first championship since 2001 and the fourth overall, tying Coach K with Adolph Rupp for second place on the all-time list.

Butler University finishes at 33-5 and showed the entire nation that the Horizon League is a quality league with good programs and solid basketball.
