WORLD CUP SOCCER: United States vs. Ghana, Saturday June 26 2:30 pm

MEGASPORTSNEWS.COM FEATURE ARTICLE

The United States’ next opponent in the World Cup competition will be Ghana. This will be in the elimination round of 16 and takes place Saturday June 26 at 2:30 pm on ABC-TV.

Ghana is fast, athletic and very good. They are the only African country left in the competition, so there is much pressure for them to succeed. The United States will have their hands full.

Fours years ago after making its World Cup debut, Ghana could become the first African team to reach the semifinals. But the Black Stars’ chances depend on the health of one of the world’s best midfielders, Michael Essien.

Essien suffered a torn hamstring that has kept him out of Chelsea’s lineup since December. He also sustained a torn knee ligament in January during the African Cup of Nations. Rehabilitation has been slow and during the World Cup competition, he rarely practices long at all.

Along with Essian, Ghana has many strengths. In the midfield with Essien, they feature Sulley Muntari and Stephen Appiah. As a unit, they can dominate with their size, speed, creativity and tenacity.

The defense is solid combining John Mensah’s physical presence with John Paintsil’s offensive skills. Samuel Inkoom adds energy from the right back spot. And Goalkeeper Richard Kingson is a veteran and has played more international games than anybody on the team.

With Essien missing at all, it is a weakness. Ghana struggles when he doesn’t play.

Milovan Rajevac, who is 56 is the head coach. He is the 10th coach in their history and the third Serbian to occupy the position since 2002. Rajevic had never coached outside his homeland. His emphasis is on controlling the central midfield suits the strengths of this team.

Ghana’s first president Kwame Nkrumah, nicknamed the team after Marcus Garvey’s Black Star Steamship Line that brought blacks to Africa early in the 20th century.

Ghana played Serbia, Australia and Germany in their group.

Landon Donovan is the latest American hero: USA 1 Algeria 0

compiled from staff and wire reports

Everybody who follows the USA Soccer team closely has said all along that the team’s fortunes and chances of succeeding in the World Cup tournament would rest on the leadership and abilities of Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey or Edson Buddle or Robbie Findley.

Well, the most notable and famous of that group, Landon Donovan became the newest American hero in this country.

The good news from Pretoria, South Africa came on Wednesday when the winning goal was scored by Landon Donovan.

Landon Donovan United States (U.S. Soccer)

He lifted the United States to the most dramatic and one of the most important wins in the history of  the sport.

Donovan’s goal, a minute into stoppage time, gave the U.S. a 1-0 victory over Algeria in a game it had to win to avoid elimination from the World Cup. That win sent the American’s to the round of 16 knockout stage and showed the team has guts and refused to quit.

The United States had several chances to win in the official 90 minutes of play and even had a goal waived off. They received their final break when goalkeeper Tim Howard made a stop seconds after regulation time had expired. He then whisked the ball ahead to Landon Donovan streaking up the right wing on a counterattack.

Donovan then fed Jozy Altidore deep in Algerian territory, but Altidore’s cross pass to Clint Dempsey hit Dempsey’s foot simultaneously as Algerian keeper Rais M. Bolhi did.

With Bolhi sitting on the ground, Donovan, who was trailing the play, was able to knock the ball loose and into the net for the win tha clinched the Group C championship for the Red, White and Blue.

The game was played before a crowd of 35, 827 Loftus Verfeld Stadium in Pretoria, South Africa. The crowd included former president Bill Clinton, who was sitting with FIFA chief Seth Blatter. Clinton even talked to the United States team in the locker room after match and told them how proud he was of their efforts.

Before Wednesday’s win, the Americans had never won a game in a World Cup and had gone out in group play five times in seven tournaments. It was the first time the U.S. won its qualifying group since 1930. A draw would have sent them home again because England beat Slovenia 1-0.

The United States will play Ghana on Saturday at 2:30 pm on ABC-TV in Rustenberg, South Africa.
