Reds rally from 7-3 deficit; score 8 runs in last two innings to defeat Arizona, 11-7

A seldom-used sqeeze bunt, a 40-year-old and a rookie game the Cincinnati Reds an 11-7 win over the rebuilding Arizona Diamondbacks.

The win by the Reds moved them to a three-game lead over the slumping St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central. The Brewers defeated the Cardinals 3-2 in Busch Stadium.

Jim Edmonds (MLB)

Manager Dusty Baker called the squeeze play in the ninth-inning with 40-year-old Jim Edmonds on third base. Edmonds hustled all the way home as pinch-hitter Chris Heisey perfectly executed the bunt that scored the go-ahead run. Heisey’s bunt was so perfect that he beat it out for an infield single. That play helped Cincinnati rally from a four-run deficit on Wednesday night.

The Reds trailing 7-3 in the top of the eighth inning, scored four runs in the eighth and ninth innings before the smallest crowd in Arizona history, 15,509.

Arizona’s bullpen was the team’s Achilles’ heel in the back-and-forth game that also saw some bad defense. Reliever Sam Demel allowed four runs in the top of the eighth on four straight hits. Aaron Heilman, the losing pitcher came on to relieve Demel and gave up an RBI double in the eighth before allowing the winning run in the ninth and three more to score after that.

The win was the Reds 35th come-from-behind win of 2010. Arthur Rhodes (4-3) pitched a scoreless eighth to get the win.

Chris Heisey (MLB)

The D-Backs rallied from a 3-1 deficit with four runs in the fifth off Reds starter Edinson Volquez. The right-hander was making his seventh start since returning from Tommy John surgery July 17 and struggled with his control throughout the game.

Volquez allowed a two-run homer by Chris Young to put Arizona up 5-3. Reds reliever Jordan Smith gave up a two-run homer to Adam LaRoche to make it 7-3 latter in the game.
