Cincinnati Bengals rookie wide receiver A. J. Green is one of the reasons the team’s offense is dangerous and explosive.

The 2011 NFL first round draft pick has been rewarded for his stellar play by being named to the AFC All-Star team for the Pro Bowl, which pits the AFC against the NFC on January 29 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Green, who leads all NFL rookies in receptions with 65 and receiving yards 1,057 this season, is the first Bengals rookie selected to the Pro Bowl since WR Cris Collinsworth in the 1981 season.

In addition to Green, a number of Cincinnati players have been named as alternates for this year’s Pro Bowl, including first alternates: DT Geno Atkins, QB Andy Dalton and K Mike Nugent.

The AFC/NFC All-Star teams are based on the concensus votes of fans, players and coaches. Each group’s vote counts as one-third towards determining the 43-man rosters that represent the AFC and NFC in the Pro Bowl.

Bengals WR Green passes Collinsworth’s rookie receiving yardage record

Cincinnati Bengals rookie A.J. Green is starting to become the new star at wide receiver now that Chad Ochocinco is gone.

The quiet rookie from the University of Georgia caught 2 passes for just 25 yards in Sunday’s 23-16 win over the Arizona Cardinals, but it allowed him to pass fan-favorite Cris Collinsworth for the franchise record for rookie receiving yards.

Green now has 1,031 yards to eclipse the 1,009 that Collinsworth, currently a broadcaster for NBC, amassed in 1981.

Collinsworth still holds the record for receptions by a rookie with 67. Green currently is at 63 and has a chance to tie or even pass that mark this week against the Baltimore Ravens.

Hall lost for rest of Bengals season; Green hurts knee

The Cincinnati Bengals proved on Sunday to the NFL and media that they could play with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In doing so, they lost two key members of their turnaround season.

They not only lost the game, 24-21, but have lost their top cornerback in Leon Hall for the season. Hall suffered a torn Achilles in the game.

Wide receiver A.J. Green hurt his knee on a touchdown catch early in the game. It was diagnosed as a hyperextended knee.

Green says he should be ready to go this week as the Bengals travel to Baltimore in a battle of 6-3 teams in the AFC North.

Bengals hang with Steelers, but come up short in 4th quarter

Andy Dalton on a rollout

CINCINNATI, OHIO — The first sellout crowd of the season at Paul Brown Stadium, 63,262, witnessed a classic AFC North Division game between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. There was good defense, some scoring and several big plays.

The veteran Steelers beat the Bengals, 24-17.

Rashard Mendenhall scored two rushing touchdowns for the Steelers including the game winner of 9 yards late in the third quarter.

With the loss, the young Bengals 5-game winning streak comes to an end.

Cincinnati rookie quarterback Andy Dalton had a decent game of 15 for 30 for 170 yards, 2 TD’s and 2 interceptions. But he handled all of the Steelers schemes on defense better than expected.

With the two touchdowns on Sunday, Dalton now has 14 overall, the most of any NFL rookie quarterback in his first nine games since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. Dalton did not suffer any sacks. The Steelers usually feast on rookie quarterbacks.

With the win, Pittsburgh is 7-3 and the Bengals fall to 6-3.

Top pass receivers in the game for Pittsburgh includes Antonio Brown 6 catches for 86 yards and Mike Wallace 6 catches for 54 yards. For Cincinnati, Andrew Hawkins 5 receptions for 56 yards and A.J. Green 2 for 36 yards and 1 touchdown.

On the ground, the Bengals Cedric Benson led all ball carriers with 57 yards on 15 carries.

BENGALS NOTES: Cincinnati 23 Buffalo 20

The Cincinnati Bengals have quite well in four games without Carson Palmer, Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens. They are 2-2 with rookie QB Andy Dalton learning on the job and the defense keeping the team in games.

GAME NOTES FROM BUFFALO WIN:

* Cincinnati never beats Buffalo. Sunday’s win stopped a 10-game losing streak to the Bills. The Bengals had not beaten Buffalo since the 1988 AFC championship game.

* Head coach Marvin Lewis was 3-for-3 in winning all replay challenges.

* Rookie WR A.J. Green has had his ups and downs in 2011 but is a finalist for the NFL’s rookie of the month award for September after leading all rookies with 15 receptions.

The first-round draft pick from Georgia caught four passes for 118 yards, including long receptions for 40 and 56 yards.

* The defense has kept the Bengals in every game this year. Mike Zimmer’s unit has some outstanding stats despite not playing any elite teams as of yet. Their stats are from playing Cleveland, Denver, San Francisco and Buffalo.

They started Sunday’s game being #1 in the NFL in yards per game rush allowed, at 2.9. The bengals have given up 276 yards per game, third fewest in the league, and has allowed the sixth-fewest points (54).

The Bengals allowed Buffalo only 4-of-14 in 3rd down situations, one offensive touchdown, no points in the second half, 273 yards total and just 4 yards per carry (21 carries for 83 yards).
